If he can't do it, no one can!
Before I played this deck, I had never won an FNM in my life. I had tried time and time again, only to be felled by a greater entity. However, the tide has turned; tonight, I slew my opponents to claim a 5-0 victory, narrowly defeating a powerful white weenie deck in the final round.
At first glance, this deck may appear to lack certain aspects of MBD, namely Mutavault. However, Mutavault is simply not necessary to win. I was able to cruise past my opponents with a consistent mana base, as well as a better curve.
Here's the rundown...
MAINDECK:
Thoughtseize: This is self-explanatory; it destroys combos and disrupts curves.
Pack Rat: It may have lost a bit of its vigor recently, but the rat is still formidable against decks without mass removal.
Devour Flesh: In the early game, your opponent gaining life is not an issue. You can easily make up for it via Desecration Demon and Gray Merchant of Asphodel.
Bile Blight
: Hoses weenie decks. 'Nuff said.
Hero's Downfall: Mainly for dangerous planeswalkers such as Elspeth, Sun's Champion, but also deals with fatties.
Underworld Connections: Gary fuel, as well as incremental card advantage. Invaluable in most matchups.
Lifebane Zombie
: Ripping away an all-important Brimaz, King of Oreskos or Polukranos, World Eater is crippling to many aggro decks. Additionally, very few things block it, and the things that do often trade.
Nightveil Specter: A solid play against most decks. If not dealt with, it can quickly dominate a game.
Desecration Demon: When you play a Demon, you leave your opponent with a choice: either waste a turn dealing with it, or let it dominate the board. Once they are out of answers, it will easily win the game.
Whip of Erebos: Lifelink helps you race, and whipping back a Gray Merchant of Asphodel wins the game more often than not.
Erebos, God of the Dead
: Same as the demon; if you can resolve him, then he must be dealt with immediately.
Gray Merchant of Asphodel: Here we go! Gary himself is the backbone of all MBD decks, and was the card that carried the day at FNM. This is by far the best common in Theros, and almost always leads to victory if resolved.
SIDEBOARD:
Pithing Needle
: Staple.
Drown in Sorrow
: This card is vital to defeat weenie decks that don't have tough creatures.
Dark Betrayal
: For the mirror.
Doom Blade: Extra removal against aggro.
Crypt Incursion: I am surprised that no one is using this card. It completely destroys BG dredge, and keeps you alive to cast Gary.
Staff of the Death Magus
: Additional aggro insurance.
I will be playing this at FNM for as long as it remains viable, and will endeavor to post results weekly. Below, I will post my debut results. Thanks for looking!
