The Deck

So a crazy idea came to my mind: Why don't I just mash all of the best mutants from Ikoria and see how it goes? Well, it exceeded my expectations beyond my wildest dreams! This is my take on Cromat deck build around the mutate mechanic from Ikoria. This deck includes pretty much every good mutate card in the Ikoria universe to be able to mash up whatever crazy creature combination possible. In my opinion, Cromat is pretty much the perfect commander for the mutate mechanic as it protects itself and can mutate into a deadly voltron machine.

Mutate

The mutate mechanic was mentioned in Surgeon General Commander (which happens to be a great commander for this deck too) and has been speculated to be a mechanic in Ikoria. So what is mutate? Basically if you cast a spell for its mutate cost, put it over or under target non-Human creature you own. They mutate into the creature on top plus all abilities under it. Relating to Cromat's ability to put it on top of library, if a merged creature is put into a library, its owner chooses the relative order of those cards. This is very useful when I ran out of mutants and so I can put the creatures mutated on Cromat back on top of my library to be replayed again for their trigger (great with Sylvan Library/Vivien, Monsters' Advocate).

Notable Synergies

Win Condition

Since Cromat's abilities are combat related, a "voltron" approach is pretty strong. The mutate mechanic feels very similar to that of an aura, turning Cromat into a lethal commander damage killing machine. There are a few mutants that are great on Cromat:

Every +1 will contribute to the genomic instability to mutate!

So I've goldfished this deck multiple times on tappedout and is positively surprised at the outcome of the deck. Here are my findings:

  • I've been debating between having 37 lands or 36 lands + Once Upon a Time and after multiple goldfishing with both configurations I like the one with OuaT better due to better top deck mid to late game. I'm also trying to increase my instants/sorcery spell count in my deck due to its value engine synergy with Lore Drakkis. Casting OuaT multiple times with Lore Drakkis or Vadrok, Apex of Thunder is pretty gross.

  • Lore Drakkis is absolutely one of the most overpowered card in the deck when you have spells like Demonic Tutor or Cyclonic Rift in the yard. It can also provide continuous protection with Heroic Intervention or Soul Manipulation.

  • Running a couple of mana dorks, especially those with hexproof like Sylvan Caryatid is great to enable and protect mutants early game.

  • Parcelbeast is a value engine and will put you ahead of the game significantly if left unchecked.

  • Vivien, Monsters' Advocate is pretty gross with Cromat. The ability to put it (and any mutants attached to it) on top of library to recast it again without losing card advantage is really nice.

  • There is an abundance of mutants with some sort of recursive ability. This means that non-exile removal isn't as painful as it seems.
