Soul Warden, Soul's Attendant, Auriok Champion, Authority of the Consuls, Shattered Angel, and Sunscorch Regent all work well together to generate many instances of lifegain over a short period of time. For Karlov and friends, quantity of lifegain is more important than quality.

However, quality does come into effect with Vizkopa Guildmage, Sanguine Bond, and Defiant Bloodlord. Every little Extort trigger becomes a threat! Miren, the Moaning Well and Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim can be lethal when used with a sizable enough creature. Like Karlov.

Life loss can play a big part in the game too. Necropotence, Greed, etc. can drain away most of your life in one turn if you want, and then a quick Tainted Sigil will gain it all back. That's a massive lifegain trigger that could end the game with Sanguine Bond.
