I play abzan, and this does look like a decent list. I will tell you this though, Abzan is weak to mono red aggro, and control is the hardest matchup. The only thing you can hope for with control is to resolve a death dealer. IF you can do that, keep enough mana open to regenerate it, then 4 to regain twice, then just outright buff and start swinging. Thoughtzeize and or despise might me good for control as well.

Thanks for the comment! control definitely is a weak match. i can do okay against mono red aggro because im all up for trades with my Heir of the Wilds. I really love Tasigur, the Golden Fang in the control match because he refuels my hand. hey, you countered my rhino, i want it back. He is filling my hand with answers which is great.

Is Back to Nature that relevant of a sideboard card? Can kill 2 coursers at once, and will destroy the occasional U/G dredge deck, but most decks I don't see running a plethora of enchantments.

Its mostly my meta. I see a lot of sultai whip, u/b dredge, mardu (chain to the rocks) crappier mardu (banishing light) Its really killer against those, especially in response to attacks, get all those blockers. i used to run Abzan Advantage but people just sac a courser or pharika's snake token instead of the whip, which is the real end goal. plus, it costs the same as Naturalize but wipes all. And anyway, who runs artifacts.

What is your strategy VS burn/prowess decks?

Well, before board, hope to have a hand with a rhino. Really sets them back. Block. Always block if able. Especially with Heir of the Wilds. In later game, leave up black for Abzan Charm or whatever other colors you need to cast it. They have to buff them a lot. Even better, downfall/ murderous cut their dudes so the targets fizzle. post board, a Drown in Sorrow or Bile Blight can normally do the trick.

Since it is completely on colour, have you considered adding Warden of the First Tree? I'm not a standard player, but it seems like it could be relevant, even if its just a 1 mana play that gets removed every time.

I did consider it, but did not want it, due to the fact that it eats up turn 2 plays, where i would much rather play a lion, or an heir, or a deathdealer.

I know you mentioned that you wouldn't like to try Warden of the First Tree, but I think you should reconsider. It's a great turn one drop. Turn two you play a two drop and simply attack for one. Turn three it helps you not miss a turn. It's also great late game as it can almost immediately become a 8/8 trampling lifelinker. It helps win against control, as they normally have to tap out earlier than they want to in order to deal with it. Also, it draws out your opponent's kill cards, and you just laugh and cast something else. I think you might want to consider dropping Sorin, Solemn Visitor to the sideboard. It's insanely slow and doesn't immediately help you win.

Wait, wait, wait. You are telling me to drop sorin, the most awesome beast in this whole deck, to the sb? Have you seen any abzan aggro list ever? At all? Sorin is a fricking beast. A monster and a beast. Born in the northeast. Just kidding. However, he is completely awesome, and he demands and answer. He gives me vampires, stabilizes, etc. Idk how you could want him to hit the sb, and for what? Whip of Erebos is the only plausible option to fill his spot, but it does less, and then i would have to devote this to reanimator, put in hornet queen, etc Not how i want to play it... Warden is not worth replacing him to have a turn 1. Like I said, warden take sup my turn 1 scry. I may try him, but he is not that great. He isn't impossible to get rid off. In fact, he is really easy to kill. Burning over 12 mana into him, just to meet a downfall is not worth it in my opinion. also, i dont have any. I would run 4 if his ability was for 1 w/b w/b and made him a 4/4 as it triggers Heir of the Wilds ferocious ability. And i also don't like advice from all the people who don't upvote, no offense.

That's fine. I respect your opinion, every player should play their preferences. Good luck going forward, I'll continue playing mine, except on my new Ugin mat, which I won at game day with it.

Back to Nature seems like an awkward sideboard inclusion, are there a lot of constellation decks in your local metagame? Also, I feel like maybe a single copy of Utter End in the sideboard would be good in some matchups, as a catch all answer to the more expensive threats that are in standard right now.

February 21, 2015 11:49 a.m.

ceji3 says... #18

There are more than 3 u/b constellation decks where i play, so that is why Back to Nature is in there. I feel Utter End is too expensive, when i already have 3 downfalls to hit any walker threats, and the sb hits anything else. will be considered tho.

I play a similar deck but I do not use Warden of the First Tree. I play Sylvan Caryatid instead. Has Warden of the First Tree come in handy yet? Seems like some nice speed which Abzan does lack, but I love a T3 Siege Rhino I can get with the Sylvan Caryatid.

I may want to use caryatid. Warden offers speed, but i personally like the turn 1 scry. However, Heir of the Wilds also is a nice addition for this deck. I may even use 3 herald of torments over them.

Any chance you can make me sig for pojo forums?

I'm impressed ;)

I would add a few Heir of the Wilds. They've worked wonders in the matches where I've had to face Abzan (Although I don't play super competitively, they seem to do well in general from matches I've also seen). If you have a 4th Hero's Downfall, I'd replace that with the Murderous Cut since Tasigur is already delving away your graveyard and Whip is exiling everything later.

Just ran this against my control deck, and I really HATE your sideboard :) Good news for you though, it's about 50/50 against control after sideboarding. How do you feel about your first game match-up out of curiosity? I think my deck favors it, but would love to hear your opinion. +1

Here's the deck it was tested against We're gonna need a team to save Zendikar. I just built it a few days ago, and it needs tweaking, but so far it's testing better than both regular Sultai and Esper builds I made that are also doing well so that you have an estimate of the control match-up

Thanks for testing, Chainer_the_Dementia_Master! Glad to see my anti control sideboard pays off. With DTK, rhino may be hosed, but the new Abzan Sideboard can hate on everything else. My G1 matchup control is moderate compared to other decks like whip. Honestly, it really is 50/50 shot, but normally landing a deathdealer or that t7 fleecemane after a crux and keeping monstrous mana up is just mean. The 1 of of Perilous Vault is the only thing that truly hurts. once you know someone is playing control, you have to switch your whole play style. To be honest though, game 1 in control depends on the control player and the abzan player, and who knows when to play what when. Thanks for the info!
