Maybeboard

Building a deck around Ghalta, Primal Hunger.

I'm currently thinking about building this deck so that every single creature in it is undercosted. To elaborate:

  1. In the first draft of the deck, either every single creature will have printed power higher than its mana value, or it is reasonably likely to get that way once cost reduction and ETB abilities are taken into account.

  2. I hope to make this better than a precon, let's say 4-6 power ranking, but don't aspire to cEDH. If I get a full deck list and mock it up and find that it's far below that what's played at my LGS, then I'm prepared to relax the theme.

  3. It's hard to search databases for this design constraint, so I'm starting with what's in my personal collection. Just by skimming through my green and artifact cards I'm pretty sure I'll be able to make a first draft without shopping. After that, we'll see.

12/7: The first draft is complete. Next step: move cards the cards I own in the "maybeboard" to the main deck, probably cutting some of the weaker vanilla or French vanilla creatures to make room. I've also started considering some creatures that aren't "undercosted." Secondary themes in the deck: self-mill and +1/+1 counters.

3/13: After months of thinking about it, I've found an idea I'm interested in: all creatures. (Except Concordant Crossroads and Primal Surge.)

3/17: I've finally got the deck to exactly 100 cards, reduced the maybeboard to the cards I'm still thinking about AND would have to buy, and sleeved it. It wound up with a few more noncreature spells than I mentioned above, but there's still more than 50 creatures and only one nonpermanent spell, i.e. close enough to noncreature in my opinion. Getting it truly down to one or zero noncreature spells would require some shopping and probably make it both worse and less fun anyway, in my opinion. Based on a little goldfishing it has a very high curve so it still needs work, but that can wait until another day or at least more testing.

3/20: Because I thought it was weird to have a nearly-all-creature deck for no mechanical reason (and, frankly, because I'm insane), I've made the commander Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, and added a dozen or so red creatures. It's still mostly green, but has more haste enablers, more fliers, and more interaction in general.
