RAWRMAGEDDON

This deck is built around ramping out big dinosaurs and watching them stomp around the table while destroying everyone's land in the process. While everyone else is trying to rebuild their mana base, Gishath, Sun's Avatar will continue to dole out the big hits, rolling out even more dinosaurs in the process.

Here is a brief, three-step rundown of how this deck is supposed to work:

  • The first objective of this deck is to cast ramp and cost reduction spells. (Gishath, Sun's Avatar isn't cheap after all, and you don't want to go and start blowing stuff up when you can't cast anything yourself...) Thus, cards like Farseek, Cultivate, and Kodama's Reach will allow you to get out valuable land, while cards like Kinjalli's Caller , Otepec Huntmaster, and Knight of the Stampede will allow you to cheat out bigger dinosaurs earlier than you should. Some of the ramp/cost reduction cards do a little more than that, though. Mwonvuli Acid-Moss allows you to ramp while destroying an opponent's land, and The Immortal Sun reduces costs, boosts creatures, and improves card draw!

  • The next objective of this deck is, of course, DINOSAURS! Ideally, you don't want to have to cast many dinosaurs as much as you will want to roll them out through Gishath, Sun's Avatar. Dinosaurs are the stars of this deck, and many have an additional ability new to Magic: The Gathering called "Enrage." The enrage ability triggers when a dinosaur takes damage, and depending on the ability's text, can do all sorts of nasty and fun stuff. For purposes of this deck, think of enrage as icing on the cake; it's merely a bonus aspect of what we are trying to do here, rather than a feature. The goal is to turn all of the dinosaurs into beaters while we focus on the next objective: land destruction.

  • Land destruction. "Let the hate flow through you." Chances are, someone at your LGS or in your playgroup will rage-quit when they start seeing cards like Armageddon hit the board. In all honesty, land destruction, or mass land destruction ("MLD") isn't the most popular of game mechanics. When I saw dinosaurs, and specifically Gishath, Sun's Avatar's ability, however, I immediately knew that I wanted to work MLD into a deck with focus. As a result, here we are. In addition to the complete land wipes such as Armageddon and Ravages of War, we have specific land removal in Wake of Destruction, Wasteland, and Strip Mine; protective land removal in Price of Glory; and combo/repeated removal through Liquimetal Coating + Splinter . Specifically, you can tap Liquimetal Coating to make a basic land an artifact, and then use Splinter to remove all of that specific land from both play and your opponent's library. This is especially good when playing a mono- or dual-colored deck with a lot of reliance on basic lands. Aura Shards + Liquimetal Coating can also be used to remove specific lands (or anything else, for that matter) when dinosaurs come into play. Finally, Crucible of Worlds will ultimately allow you to play land cards from the graveyard, up until someone gets sick of it and removes it from play. Usually, however, it is good for at least 1 or 2 turns, which is a sizable advantage when everyone else at the table is manaless.

There are also a few synergies/combos in this deck that will help you on your way to victory ("It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."):

Land destruction. Deprive your opponents of their most basic needs. Gishath cares not, it's a dinosaur and probably just wants to eat. Let the DINOQUAKE begin!

Updates Add

There are quite a few to list. From Rivals of Ixalan, I have added:

I removed Living Plane and its associated combo pieces. While cute, there was a lot of potential for it to go belly-up, and the cards were taking up valuable deck real estate. Instead, I added the following:

I look forward to hearing everyone's feedback and appreciate the support and upvotes. Keep 'em coming!
