Gitting Down with Gitrog

Commander / EDH

Budget-ish The Gitrog Monster EDH

I ran the standard tricks with The Gitrog Monster and Dakmor Salvage and found it fun, but basically solitaire. My playgroup LOATHED it, but I couldn't just scrap my Frog companion, so I removed Dakmor Salvage and tweaked it into a sub-themed landfall deck by focusing on the extra land drops and cashing in on them alongside The Gitrog Monster and his draw triggers to make as many combination plays as I can without ever having seemingly infinite triggers from Dakmor Salvage.

You still want to take as much advantage of The Gitrog Monster so to take the best advantage of the combos available you want him in play. A couple combinations will make him unnecessary, but you will always be stronger with him on the field.

Being able to discard cards freely from your hand and increasing land drops are the best tools in your box. Skirge Familiar allows you to bank while discarding, so that you make use powerful spells like Faith of the Devoted for each discard. Since it hits all opponents you only need to usually hit 20 of these triggers to win out. Pairing it with anything that also destroys land and makes more draw triggers is a big way to work into more discards and therefor more triggers for Faith of the Devoted. While Skirge Familiar is the best as it requires the to trigger Faith of the Devoted, but if you've been diligently dumping cards into your graveyard you'll find lots of available mana in cards like Songs of the Damned. If you've successfully dropped extra lands quickly you'll find not only mana, but draw triggers off of The Gitrog Monster with Rain of Filth or preferably Squandered Resources, but you can still self-destruct your own lands AND protect your creatures with Sylvan Safekeeper. If you're fortunate enough to pull any of those you will hopefully find yourself with a bucket of mana or opponents who you've whittled to death with Faith of the Devoted. If you lack Faith of the Devoted and have banked enough mana you can cast Death Cloud and if you're lucky drop a Splendid Reclamation right after which will likely make all your opponents quit or deal with you having tons of lands while they have none.

Splendid Reclamation is extremely powerful if you drop it with enough land in your graveyard and have either Priest of Titania or Rampaging Baloths in play to make a ton of creatures to swam with, but it's way more fun to drop with enough lands in your graveyard to win out with Ob Nixilis, the Fallen in play.

Circling back to being able to discard you can also pump you creatures like Wild Mongrel or Noose Constrictor and sac them with Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord. You can also find some easy wins if Brawn is buried with a beefy monster swinging or The Gitrog Monster wearing Oblivion Crown and hitting them for commander damage to death.

There's one infinite win-con in the deck that requires having Necrotic Ooze in play and able to tap with Devoted Druid, Quillspike, and Bloodrite Invoker all in the graveyard. It kills everyone, heals you and gives infinite mana. It's kind of dull, but it makes a ton of sense in this deck and theme, so there you go.

TL;DR: Put The Gitrog Monster in play. Find a way to discard to your benefit. Extend your turn with draws from destroying your own land, or use dredge cards to dump more lands from your library into your graveyard for more draws. Abuse discarding with discard triggers or even your end step to get 7 card in your hand that put you in a better place to win. Find a way to win quickly because no card with "Monster" in it's name gets left alone for very long and if you're destroying your own lands and have a 5cmc commander, it can get dicey if the game goes too long. Also, if you are playing someone who might have a Bojuka Bog be very very careful. If you can find yourself with Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre in hand and a discard trigger on the table, then you can protect yourself.

Happy to take any advice or suggestions. I'll hopefully clean this description up soon, but wanted to get this down.
