What about a Whip of Erebos ?

hollahollagetdolla I was thinking about whip but I don't know what I could take out in its place.

I would take out 1 Scavenging Ooze since you risk drawing a lot of them without a way to fuel them if they have to compete over graveyards. Maybe replace 2 Read the Bones with 1 whip and 1 Underworld Connections. I think that card, along with whip, is just insane :)

Alright I'll try that out.

For Aggro and non-devotion deck, Read the Bones > Underworld Connections .

Connection seems awesome because you can buy many times, but, truth is, you pay extra mana for each card you get, and your fastest draw will be on turn 4 - a single card.

Bones Scry make you deck more consistent, faster, and don't lock down your lands every turn to use it. Scry is a powerful mechanic.

To draw 3+ cards with Connections (out functioning Bones) youll spend 5 mana, and 3 HP. All that spread in 4+ turns.

Bones will give you 2 cards in one turn spending 3 mana + 2 HP and you get a Scry to see whats coming / phase out junk.

Sure you need that chance to draw more cards in a longer game, sacrificing resources for it? The Mono-Colored decks are fast as hell. Do you really have all that time?

jsansoldo Good point, also against this majority aggro meta, the faster you can do things and the faster you can get things out helps guarantee they don't kill you on turn 3-5, and 1 mana may be the difference between losing and winning.

Agree w/ a lot of the Read the Bones > Underworld Connections, but Read the Bones is a sorcery which doesn't allow it to use "free mana" during your opponents turn, I like Underworld Connections I can leave a few mana open for answers and if a problem doesn't come up during an opponents turn I can use it

Thinking about moving x3 Read the Bones to sideboard, and x3 Deathrite Shaman main board because playing the deck it feels like there not enough bodies main board.

Since you do have a good bit of Black devotion you can't really go wrong with one Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx Golgari ftw.

StormageddonX Yeah, actually i was thining about putting nykthos in, i'll add it in my next playtest and see how it goes

Nice build. Looks pretty damn strong.

I would drop Whip of Erebos (crap "in" card) 1x Vraska the Unseen 1x Doom Blade and 1x Underworld Connections or Read the Bones for 4x Thoughtseize . 2x Thoughtseize on SB is just not worth running at all.

check out my deck, it's similar.

APPLE01DOJ Thanks for the comment, i was actually just looking at your deck (Very good deck by the way!). Im a little hesitant to remove the Whip of Erebos because it has actually saved me a few times, when my opponent has a lot of removal, the Desecration Demon 's with lifelink can get a little overwhelming, and the Reaper of the Wilds are not too bad at that either, i will consider taking out x1 Vraska the Unseen 2x Read the Bones and 1x Underworld Connections , or put them sideboard for the Thoughtsieze 's

APPLE01DOJ says... #14

sounds good!

I don't like the Whip because It's too slow. Plus it really competes with Scavenging Ooze which also has life gain but legs, and solves more problems IMO. ...but if it has saved you, then it clearly has more mileage for you and I understand why you wanna keep it in.

Grisly Salvage is the card that really makes Deathrite Shaman work in Standard. You want lands in the grave early so he can ramp with them and you can get those T3 Desecration Demon s out. Plus putting additional spells in the grave tDRS can eat and ping away 2 damage each round.

What do you recommend I should take out for Grisly Salvage ?

December 3, 2013 2:41 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #16

1st Drop the 1x Doom Blade MB completely to replace it with the 4th copy of Thoughtseize . think about it, Seize hits everything for 1 less mana. Boom Dlade misses tons of stuff for more mana.

Then I would drop Doom Blade Vraska the Unseen and 1x Gaze of Granite from your SB to put 1x Underworld Connections and any combination of 3x Putrefy + Hero's Downfall + Lifebane Zombie on your SB. This will give u 4 slots for 4x Grisly Salvage MB while not weakening the overall strength of your deck.

Edisd says... #17

Alright 1 put in 2 grisly salvage while I try to decide what to take out for the other 2

December 3, 2013 3:10 p.m.

mflaxer says... #18

-2 Grisly Salvage +1 Whip of Erebos and +1 Underworld Connections

that's what I wound up doing in my incredibly similar deck Don't bother, I'll kill it anyway (rock) (please check it out and tell me why I'm wrong)

also think about switching Deathrite Shaman with Elvish Mystic I know it sound rediculus that elvish mystic could be better then deathrite shaman, but hear me out. This is more or less a control deck right? and control decks need to be one step ahead in mana and card advantage. I know you like the life gain from Deathrite Shaman , so did I, but think about it, it's not really that much and your life doesn't really after if they can't get a threat to stick to the board. Also since you're playing varska which is a decent amount of mana you can't always rely on getting to five. the mystic will help with this. Also a turn 3 Desecration Demon is awesome. Mana is super important in a deck like this. you need a lot so that you can play threats and control the board at the same time. Deathrite Shaman 's two life swing a turn how ever you want it is not really too substantial however getting a mana advantage is.

just my little tid bit, anyway +1 from me and come check mine out to tell me why i'm wrong

Deathrite Shaman should be mana ramping, hence the point of Grisly Salvage

T1 DRS T2 Girsly Salvage T3 Desecration Demon. Yes elvish mystic does the same, but he also does nothing after he's done mana ramping. DRS pings for 2 damage, and in emergencies can gain life. (probably shouldnt be using that as his main purpose)

APPLE01DOJ says... #20

Not to mention neutralizes threats Gary Asphault Merchant from being Whip of Erebos 'd back into play.

...check it out, a spill from my deck about why Deathrite Shaman trumps Elvish Mystic .

"Well Deathrite Shaman acts as a mana ramp like Elvish Mystic and while one could argue that Elvish Mystic is a more consistent ramp, I would argue that I can use Golgari Charm as spot removal and Deathrite Shaman would survive when Elvish Mystic wouldn't. Not to mention DRS eats graveyards, and deals 2 damage each turn when not ramping. Can even provide life in a pinch."

December 11, 2013 12:13 p.m.

Edisd says... #21

I'll playtest the deck both ways and see which is best, but i like the Deathrite Shaman 's a lot

December 11, 2013 12:27 p.m.

mflaxer says... #22

well, in my experience DRS is more of a win more card. also his ramp is extremely conditional. Also I think the UWC is a much better draw spell for you than Grisly Salvage because GS can't grab your removal or your other draw spells or vraska. I think those should be out for an UWC and a whip as those are better for a longer game, which with this much control you're aiming for longer game. also one of the best decks in the format right now is ester control and UWC and whip are some of their worst nightmares coming out of this deck, and reaper. The two damage from them doesn't matter and leaving a mana open for it is playing mana down instead of mana up. So if you use him to ping or gain life you're playing mana down! also you have life gain from scooze and whip so I don't think you need that much more. I also think four scooze may be too many but mines a little different (they step on each other's toes)

I would seriously consider playing Underworld Connections . The power of that card is insane. Over the long game it will win you the game, in a non devotion deck its just as good as a devotion deck. Over the long haul, left unanswered it will take over a game because you draw into so much gas its stupid. Junk midrange run it as a 3 of in the main deck, and one in the sideboard. It can and will take over games. I'd seriously consider running it.

Well, I don't know about you, but I see no reason to put Doomwake Giant in there. They are literally your only enchantments, so they're pretty much just 4/6's, which don't get me wrong, is pretty good, but it's kinda pointless to have them in there. Maybe instead, put in Polukranos, World Eater or some Master of the Feast's. Just an idea.

Edisd says... #25

Runlue I find Doomwake Giant does wonders against Jeskai Ascendancy decks, also i have Whip of Erebos and Courser of Kruphix as enchantments. As for Master of the Feast i really don't want my opponents drawing cards as i find i have really slow games, even if it is a 5/5 flyer. As for Polukranos, World Eater i have considered him but i find the cards i have currently better than him, so there's nothing to really take out.
