Gotta Pay the Boatman

Every death come with hard decisions.

Gotta Pay the Boatman forces players to decide if they want to let their precious little health erode or give me my cards back.

Bringing someone down to a small life total and keeping them there is a key part of the strategy. Cards like Tree of Perdition and Sorin Markov do a very good job of this quickly. Because Athreos' ability happens immediately, if someone is at very low health and can't afford to pay the life then I can recycle cards like Fleshbag Marauder, Shriekmaw and Necrotic Sliver over and over again. The rest of the deck is mostly taking advantage of these mechanics happening, Grim Haruspex, Harvester of Souls and Pawn of Ulamog love to see creatures cycling through my hand, battlefield and graveyard all game long.

New favorite combo achieved. Erebos, God of the Dead + Tree of Perdition. Exchanging life with a player and the tree that would increase a player's life total counts as life gain and is prevented by Erebos. This means that you can use the tree on a player two turns in a row and their life will be 13 with the tree being back to 13 as well. After you have brought someone down from 40, you can exchange the high toughness tree with the lowest health opponent. This means that the combo essentially boils down to: bring the highest life opponent down to the same as the lowest life opponent, every other turn. Goes fantastic with Pontiff of Blight so you can extort people at the same time and bring players down lower and lower every turn.
