With only one Wurmcoil Engine and Ponder banned in Modern, does Treasure Mage really provide enough consistency for getting out Wurmcoil Engine quickly? If you don't have it in your opening hand t3 Wurmcoil will be very difficult. Just sayin', not that t4 Wurmcoil isn't already impressive. Also, how do you do against control decks? For instance Syncopate .

Excuse me I didn't realize that Preordain was also banned in Modern... O.o awkward.

This deck isn't the modern version of my Illusion deck. I just moved the tag to Modern because it's not standard anymore.
I'll get my modern version of this deck posted once I'm happy with it.

The reason I mentioned nims death mantle was because it works good when your phantasmal image is already copying a wurmcoil. You already get more tokens and at the same time you can use the Nim's ability to equip itself on the image with an equip ability that doesn't target. Therefore you bring back the illusion and copy the wurmcoil or whatever you want again.
It's also nice that you can tap your blue creatures to use nims as well.

Oh and I'm also assuming your using the nim as the ability to save your creature from the graveyard not to actually just equip it.

Christ this is well discussed, all I really have to say from running illusions personally is I've always gotten more out of card:Jace's Phantasm than phantasmal bear, that said, I run both... so yeah great deck, love the grand architect concept now I have to go out and scrounge up a playset :[

I'm very late to the party here, and a new MTG player to boot... so I probably don't understand all the legality.. but how about a Lux Cannon ?It's cheap enough to pull with Treasure Mage and has synergy with Contagion Engine 's proliferate, as well as giving you a solid removal option (IMO)

Lux Cannon is a little slow and I'm not gonna tutor for a Contagion Engine every time like I would Wurmcoil Engine .

Make's sense! The deck gave me some interesting ideas anyway! I'll probably play like this and adjust for some of the rarer, more expensive cards :)
January 8, 2013 7:37 a.m.
It may again be a bit expensive to kick, but I may add in AEther Figment to my version, as if I do get Contagion Engine out, and if the Figment had been kicked, I could add counters to it..

I have absolutely no idea why this deck is rated as high as it is. I lose with this deck over 90% of the time. It has no way to kill creatures, it can't deal with mass creatures. or it can't counter things like wrath of god type stuff or damage to all creature type things which absolutely cripples this deck. I like how the description says:
T1: Island, Phantasmal BearT2: Island, Lord of the UnrealT3: Island, Grand Architect , tap him and blue creatures, Wurmcoil Engine
Trouble is for this to ACTUALLY work, you have to have Wurmcoil in your starting hand, or top deck him on your 3rd turn. There is 1 Wurmcoil in the entire 60 card deck. Those odds more than suck. Now even if you ARE lucky enough to have all the aforementioned cards in your starting hand and are able to play them with mana, your Lord of the unreal, and/or the grand Architect are always killed easily by a bolt or god knows what else. I have NEVER been able to pull a Wurmcoil on turn 3. Thumbs down for me.

The one time I managed to get a Wurmcoil on turn 3 it got mana leaked, damnit.

Ouch, that is quite unfortunate. That almost calls for a ballistic rage!

That comment sounds kind of butthurt haha.
This deck honestly won 70%+ of the time I played it. Mind you I don't play competitive, this deck would never be stable enough, but this deck is ridiculously powerful in casual.
I have friends who won't even play against this deck because it destroys them. This deck eats other combo decks(an example would be Birthing Pod back in the day) and did fairly well against control. Gave aggro a good fight sometimes
It's too bad cockatrice doesn't work anymore because I can pilot the balls off this deck and you'd be able to see how great this is.

Leafs_suck when you hit connect instead of cockatrice.de for the server type in www.woogerworks.com, my username is Bocaj, if you ever see me online hit me up. Also, probably the reason I wasn't doing well playing this deck is 1. I was playing competetive. 2. I probably don't know how to play the deck nearly as well as you do.

As long as this deck is non standard you should consider Into the Roil or Echoing Truth over Disperse, they are strictly better. :)
