EMBRACE THE PAIN

This deck is built to be masochistic with BIG payoffs. More pain = bigger gain. It's a sharp double edged sword that aims to consistently have a win set up by turns 1 - 5.

BE WARNED: This deck is capable of a lot and it's really fun to pilot, but will take you to the edge of death in the process of winning and it can be tricky to pilot at first. Your opponents don't kill you, you kill you or win the game. It takes "win or die trying" to another level.

BASICS

Gain mana and card advantage by sacrificing, self-mill, and paying life to access the win ASAP. Protect win conditions with stax pieces, counterspells, and removal. Replay spells with Muldrotha, the Gravetide if needed. Think of your graveyard as an extension of your hand.

MAIN WINNING STRATEGIES: (detailed in tabs below)

  • Self-mill
  • Infinite Mana-Storm
  • Infinite Turns

GOAL

My goal with this deck is to have it be very interactive on multiple levels with multiple strategies that can web together in a synergetic way. With a variety of 2-3 card combos, you should be able to advance the different win-conditions at the same time. If one plan won't work, you should be able to quickly and easily access another. Capable of explosive early-game plays with controlling and assertive mid-game strategies. If Muldrotha, the Gravetide ever hits the field, she really amplifies the overall capabilities of an already independent and intimidating deck.

Because of the high cost to cast Muldrotha, the Gravetide, I've built this deck to function and win without relying on her to be out. Instead she is used as more of a "back-up plan" to give you a Second Chance. (Pun intended) Combos oriented around Muldrotha, the Gravetide are meant to be game-ending, or at the very least, alter the game greatly in our favor. Because of this restriction, I've cut some otherwise great cards for her.

With the right starting hand, this is the main early game strategy to aim for.

USE EITHER

WITH EITHER

OR

Doomsday WITH Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler in play to remove your library, tutor and play Thassa's Oracle for the win.

Use top-deck tutors such as Vampiric Tutor to place key cards on top. Then use Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler to play and use a number of critical creatures from the grave including Hermit Druid and Thassa's Oracle.

ETIQUETTE NOTE:

These types of wins are notoriously salt inducing, but they are incredibly fast and that's what we want in cEDH. Have power level discussions before using. Do not use this build against casual builds or pre-cons, or you will have an upset playgroup.

WITH BOTH

PURPOSE

With these combos, you create infinite mana and an infinite storm while also being able to play all the permanents from your graveyard. Storm-mill your opponents with Bitter Ordeal or Brain Freeze.

You can also use the Eternal Witness line to infinitely tutor your entire library with things like Demonic Tutor, draw out your library with Aether Spellbomb, or wipe your opponents'boards with Assassin's Trophy

Second Chance is excellent for this pain filled build. With 5 or less life and Muldrotha, the Gravetide out, it will give you infinite turns.

Use Lim-Dul's Vault, Ad Nauseam, or Necropotence to get your life down to 5 fast. There is a handful of other life payment abilities in here as well. Do not be afraid to use them, especially if you have access to this combo.

This combo is risky and can be tricky to pull off if you don't plan properly. Although, it is exciting when done correctly.

This is a mid to late-game win strategy.

(In order of current priority)

  • Veil of Summer was initially cut due to its color restrictions. Although, after a few plays without it, I believe this is worth fitting in. Considering replacing one of the counterspells with this.

  • Wishclaw Talisman took me a minute to get behind, but I believe adding this will be a benefit. Ideally, use and win in the same turn.

  • March of Swirling Mist offers some serious flexibility and great utility to this build. Don't know what to cut out for this yet though.

  • Chains of Mephistopheles I feel could have serious potential with this deck. Not sure where to place it yet though. I know it's not in most cEDH decks for a reason, but if it could go anywhere, my guess would be with Muldrotha, the Gravetide.

  • The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale also has great potential. I'm holding it out due to price / accessibility and that it would effect the deck's dorks as well as combo pieces. Although, due to the masochistic nature of this deck, I still think it would be a good fit.

CUT, BUT STILL CONSIDERING

  • Gilded Drake is a fantastic card. I didn't like cutting this one out, but I felt it didn't benefit the main goals of the deck.

  • Swan Song is great. Although, I didn't want too many counterspells and I felt An Offer You Can't Refuse offered more flexibility with this build.

  • Triskaidekaphile is another easy to access win-condition when paired with Ad Nauseam or Necropotence. Although, due to the time restriction on it's win condition, I've decided to hold off on this.

  • Rhystic Study is another cut I'm considering putting back in. I just felt like this wasn't necessary in comparison to what's here.

  • Laboratory Maniac fits the deck's theme well. The only reason I cut it is because there's not a huge focus on card draw in this deck. Unlike Thassa's Oracle or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, this doesn't let you immediately take advantage of an empty library. The only reason I see to keep it in would be if a player in your group uses Void Winnower or also uses a storm-mill strategy.

  • Toxic Deluge is a great choice that will also help get it your life down to 5 quickly for Second Chance. Although, you'd need to cast Second Chance and Muldrotha, the Gravetide afterwards which felt slower. Still, I might put this in later.

  • Stasis works great on it's own, but it's one of those cards that works best if Muldrotha the Graveside is out. Even then, it's not a hard lock like Second Chance.

Save counterspells and removal pieces for either your opponents win, or for these cards which can hinder the flow of this deck.

Thanks for looking. I hope it provides some inspiration. This is one of my personal favorites. It runs like a dream when you know how to weild it. I'm always open to feedback and suggestions.
