The green sources are for Nature's Claim out of the SB as well as Abrupt Decay that I use against certain matchups. The decay isn't on the SB currently but it gets moved in and out of the SB often. I think I will put the black discard back in now that you mention it. I used to run 3 IoK MD before maindecking the Ensnaring Bridge and Jace's Phantasm , and it seemed to work against certain decks. Since Visions is an instant, I can just draw at the end of my opponent's turn and use most of the cards during my turn, as I normally don't use visions until the rest of my hand has been emptied. It does look like a nonbo in this list, but playing a modern Ancestral Recall is the main draw to playing mill imho!

I think that white offers better splash options. You get Stony Silence , which is better against Affinity, and you can play Path to Exile , Rest in Peace , etc. should you want to, which are much better cards overall than Nature's Claim .

Tbh, I don't have any Marsh Flats so I don't run white atm. I also like having a turn 1 out to a Leyline of Sanctity , as that card completely shuts down my deck. The 1 mana answers to a leyline in white aren't as versitile against other decks (like affinity), which is why I decided to use green. Stony Silence and Path would be great additions (I will not use Rest in Peace since it's a nonbo with Surgical Extraction , Crypt Incursion , and Snapcaster Mage however), but in my local meta the green splash serves me well. If I were to take this to a large event, the white splash would help more against the field but atm I can't blow $ on more fetches.

a small simple change would be to add maybe 2xEvolving Wilds to combo a little with Hedron Crab ....Also i agree with a few people who commented above, i've never seen Darkness before, and i also absolutely love it!

Darkness really is the bomb, since it can stop Infect's early-game win and just give me that last turn or 2 to win. Now that the new set is being spoiled, I'm definitely going to pick up a set of Polluted Delta for this deck for more H.Crab activations, so no worries there!

Verdant Catacombs is nice but a Scalding Tarn into a Steam Vents would give you double landfall for Hedron Crab while giving access to the other half of Breaking / Entering .. Just a thought

I already have access to the other half of Breaking / Entering due to Shelldock Isle . However, in all the games I've ever played with this deck, there's never been an instance where grabbing one of their creatures has been better than milling them out more, so I don't think the red splash is necessary. Plus there's almost no way I ever get 6 mana since I'm only running 21 lands. I consider my 'cap' for cmc at 3. I may be turning this deck esper now that Flooded Strand has been reprinted, but I need to get a 2nd copy before I do that. Thanks for looking though!

Put the Mesmeric Orb in. It will be good! There is nothing that says to me "let me think about it again".It just mills in an still good amount in early game and till mid game more than a Glimpse the Unthinkable .

Hey, I updated my mill deck drastically. I added in Treasure Cruise, Thought Scour, and bumped it up to a playset of Visions of Beyond. This allows me to draw an unbelievable amount of cards, almost always hitting my land drops to trigger Hedron Crab and to curve out perfectly to get the most out of your cards! The Thought Scour fuels Treasure cruise, along with the 8 fetch lands I am running now. Also the double hits for the good 'ol crab is amazing!

Maybe I missed it, but Leyline of the Void. it stops Graveyard based decks, which seems to be your worst match up. even if it is a nombo with Visions of Beyond. but you still get to keep your graveyard which is cool. have fun.

December 18, 2014 10:02 a.m.

I have a set of Leyline of the Void, and the only matchup where I want it is against Tron or other decks that run the big 3 Eldrazi. LotV is better in this deck than something else like Rest in Peace, but as long as I have any one of my other gravehate cards (and I include Surgical Extraction in those), I normally don't worry too much about what they have. I figure that not enough people are running Vengevine decks right now, so I pretty much just plan on dodging that matchup if I ever take this deck to another large event. I have tested against a Loam-Venge decklist, and I'll agree that the matchup is very tough. There just aren't enough SB slots to cover everything lol. Thanks for looking though!

Love this deck! My friend and I just discovered the Trap and Mind Funeral etc. He built a modern mill deck using some of those same cornerstones and it's a blast to play against and with. I always hated Mill because it took forever and was boring. This is REALLY quick. nothing boring about it at all

April 1, 2015 9:37 a.m.

Thanks for the comment jraynor! Against most of the competitive Modern decks that run fetches or search their library in some way, this deck is the bomb! Unfortunately I haven't been able to play it very much recently since many players in my meta are running hatebears, Merfolk, or budget token decks without fetches to abuse with this deck. But I can tell you this: if you get even 1 free Trap activation during a game, the chances of you winning via mill almost feels guaranteed!

Someone at my LGS windmill-slammed four traps after an opponent's T1 fetch. That will live on forever in the annals of the store's history. Here's hoping you get that hand someday!

Also, love the deck.

Thanks for the comment ComradeJim270! I do want to play the epic 4 Trap hand someday! I actually think UB mill has a better spot in the meta with the new bannings. It is naturally great against the big mana decks thanks to GQ's and Surgical Extraction in the MD. The only thing is being able to deal with fast agro like infect, which feels like the worst matchup. Otherwise, I think UB mill can be a contender again!

I'm not sure how you'd do that without compromising your game plan. I imagine you'd need to devote a lot of sideboard slots to it. Sweepers are good, especially ones that reduce toughness. If you were in red you'd have Pyroclasm and Anger of the Gods, but I'm not sure that's worth it. Damnation and Languish feel a little slow.

What about Dismember?

I'm actually thinking of brewing up my own mill deck. Might want your advice when I do, if that's cool.

February 14, 2016 3:41 a.m.

I'll be here whenever you do decide to put a list together ComradeJim270. In all honesty though, I've been testing an esper build now and it looks promising. Mostly b/c Path to Exile helps activate Archive Trap against decks that don't have fetches. I also DESTROYED a tron deck last week in testing since the newer tron builds have eschewed emrakul in favor of Newlamog. Here's the link to the esper list if you're interested- esper list

I actually started with Check Yourself Before you Deck Yourself, but it's really just the skeleton of a list at this point.

I think it is best to not turn on your opponent's removal, so drop the 4 Hedron Crab. You can add 2 Snapcaster Mage as they already add value when they enter the battlefield, and then 2 other cards (maybe sweepers like Damnation)

February 24, 2016 4:19 p.m.

Clawed6- Hedron Crab is the only source of consistent, repeatable mill in the deck. I'm actually very happy if the opponent wastes their mana removing it in the early game, since that means they're not dropping threats to beat me to death. The crabs are great after turn 1 as well, since you can just play them out before playing your fetchland that turn and mill your opponent for 6 cards for essentially 1 mana, making it a better rate than Tome Scour. Sometimes they do well as roadblocks when needed against agro, so I'm fine with their inclusion.

My updated mill list is esper now instead of sultai, which can be found here if you're interested. This version is a little dated, but the deck hasn't changed all that much.

That god hand must be epic. Have you ever drawn it? In any case, this is a great deck. Well done

Love the deck. I just recently got back into my UB Mill deck since there have been more printings to help it. I have the main board, but I'm struggling with a sidebaord and could use some help and guidance. I know I want Lurrus of the Dream-Den and Ashiok, Dream Render. Any advice would be apprecaited.
