With the release of Guild of Ravnica we are seeing many great mechanics waiting to be broken. However, GOR has given us the absolute best storm card ever.....Runaway Steam-Kin (RSK).
Why is this the best storm card? Well how about turn 1 kill? Or turn 2 for 1000? That’s right ladies and gents when Steam-Kin runs it definitely is a runaway.
Now it’s a darn good thing that storm triggers are not considered a cast spell and that RSK can’t have more than 3 counters because RSK would be completely broken then.
So turn 1 is extremely rare, about 1/7000 games but it is possible and it’s T1 in modern. T2 will be rare but should happen more often, T3 and T4 should be consistent.
Now the way I am building the deck I am not including the T1 kill but it goes as follows:
Play mountain, exile Simian Spirit Guide (SSG)
Cast RSK
Play 3x Pact of the Titan
Play a Goblin (or Reckless) Bushwacker
Each pact is now a 5/4 with haste, RSK is a 3/2 trample haste, and Bushwacker is a 2/1 haste for a grand total of 20 damage. Credit for figuring out T1 kill goes to Marijn Lybaert.
For the T2 kill
T1-Mountain, SSG, RSK
T2-Mountain, ManaRamp (SSG and Desperate Ritual or 2x Desperate Ritual), Grinning Ignus
Now things get fun, remove counters from RSK, keep playing and returning Grinning Ignus for an infinite number, you will need to bounce Ignus to have the mana to cast grapeshot, good game.
*NOTE: this does not generate infinite mana. It only generates enough mana to keep the cast and bounce of Grinning Ignus going. However you have one spare red mana, if you can SSG again you can cast a second RSK to generate mana.*
Anyways, let me know what you guys think.
