Hey, I play a fair amount of duel commander (1v1), and I figured I'd leave a few thoughts.Go for the Throat is a very strong removal spell (possibly better than doom blade in most instances) so i would highly recommend trying it. Also, with indestructible creatures like gods now running around, a card like dismember would also become incredibly useful. I'm not sure what Archaelogical dig and Henge of Ramos do for your deck. It's possible they might just be worse than swamps. Other non-basic lands that might be better are Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , Cabal Coffers and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth .Phyrexian Obliterator might have gone up recently, but adds another BBBB to your devotion count. Inexpensive draw power like Night's Whisper and Sign in Blood are also useful, as is Phyrexian Rager who also provides a decent body.Those are just a few thoughts to get you started! Welcome to the format and enjoy your Griselbrand :D oh and also Kokusho, the Evening Star is a pretty good creature to reanimate, given the chance!

Thanks TheMillKid I like all of those suggestions. The only ones I know that I have currently are Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Sign in Blood . Not sure why I put those other 2 lands in there. Any suggestions on what I may want to take out?

I would say that intimidation, liturgy of blood and asphyxiate are outclassed by other cards (mostly because sorcery speed removal sometimes just isn't good enough.) Also, i can't believe i forgot to suggest Exquisite Blood which is the other half of the sanguine bond combo! Finally, Siren song lyre and Staff of the death magus aren't incredibly useful, since black just wants to kill the opponent's creatures rather than tap them down. And the lifegain off of the staff isn't really too worthwhile, since griselbrand has lifelink.

grislebrand is banned in EDH although you could play it in casual probobly though

it's banned in multiplayer EDH but not in the french 1v1 (with 30 life an no sol ring/other fast mana)

I think that Pain Seer is probably not a good card in this deck as you have 31 cards over 4 cmc meaning you would be taking a lot of damage for one extra card. also in edh there are usually lots of kill spells or blockers to stop pain seer surviving combat in order to untap. I would replace it with a Crypt Ghast or Caged Sun .

It's funny you mentioned that awesomeguy37 because I was looking at Pain Seer today and thought about it not being that great in here. I actually have a Crypt Ghast so I could definitely make that switch.

Here are some super fun mono-black cards that would b great in your deck.Decree of Pain or Damnation as board wipes.Gatekeeper of Malakir , Butcher of Malakir and Liliana of the Veil for some more sacrificing effects.Other mono-black fun stuff things are Ob Nixilis, the Fallen , Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief or Phyrexian Obliterator Finally, to use Griselbrand 's ability, you need to pay life. Therefore it only makes sense to have some life-gain effects such as Consume Spirit , Disciple of Bolas , Exsanguinate or Kokusho, the Evening Star . Hope this helps!

Made Erebos, God of the Dead the commander due to my inability to cast Griselbrand even once in the 10 or so games that I played. Just way too expensive and not enough ramp.

i think you can't use Crypt Ghast because it has white in the dual mana symbol for extort but you could put Desecration Demon in instead

mama_tom Extort is ok in both duel and multiplayer. It isn't considered part of the color identity.

Cards that just came out in Journey into Nyx that u should look into would be Dictate of Erebos , Squelching Leeches , and Hall of Triumph . But for some trolly fun you always have Worst Fears .

Added some "ramp" and tried to cut down on the mana curve a bit. Also swapped out erebos for Griselbrand again. Really want to run it ha ha ha.

It still needs Caged Sun for some ramp and maybe think about adding Charcoal Diamond or Worn Powerstone aswell. i think Sol Ring is banned in 1v1, but if it isn't put it in.

Maybe also Whip of Erebos for some lifegain/recursion.

What are your thoughts on Caged Sun vs Gauntlet of Power ? Gauntlet buffs ALL of that color where as Caged doesn't. Gauntlet costs one less, do I run both or choose between the 2?

you need the two best kill spells Hero's Downfall and Victim of Night

I have no idea why I never put Hero's Downfall in there, too much keeping Standard and EDH as separate formats, with a few exceptions. Victim of Night seems quite good, thank you!

Swap a swamp for Bojuka Bog .

Talara's Bane is WAY too narrow in 1v1 EDH. Swap it for Vampiric Tutor .

Lost Hours , Horrifying Revelation , and Mind Rot are all swell early game, but they fall behind in effectiveness every turn. Add in their place Rune-Scarred Demon , Butcher of Malakir , and Phyrexian Arena .
