Grixis modern control. Looking to make it competitive and interactive.
General idea is, of course, control the board. The original deck this is heavily based on relies pretty much exclusively on Cruel Ultimatum and manlands for winning. While I'm sure it works, that isn't entirely my style.
I've made it a Teachings deck, since Teachings does work. Not sure whether to side or main Teferi, since I can search out MoC with Teachings with him out, as well as do plenty of other silly things. Also somewhat unsure on Clique. Considering swapping Clique and Teferi. Anyway, win con is mostly Ultimatum and beating with the few creatures/manlands, but Master of Cruelties followed up by a swift Bolt to the dome works wonderfully.
Favorable matchups:Esper Teachings/gifts. Pretty grindy games, but Grixis generally comes out on top here--especially if they get greedy with their manlands!Almost any combo deck. I've played a few, and the meta holds: Control beats combo. ONE EXCEPTION I played this sick combo deck that looted Griselbrand or Emrakul to the yard, then discarded stuff for mana, reanimated them with some Kamigawa card, and used something that they could discard for extra combat. This deck wasn't as tuned then, but I doubt I can beat it without at least two Rune Snags in the first turn or two.Melira Pod: The combo is held off and the beaters are kept at bay with board control.Mill. I have actually never seen a mill deck win, ever. I've heard of it, but usually only against dredge and other mill decks. This deck stops the big spells and just burns them out before they can grind down.A number of others that I don't remember too well. There were some other brews that didn't stand up too well. The above are really the only notable ones.
Current issues found:Inconsistent against Tron, at least mono-U Tron. G1 is almost always a loss. G2 usually swings my way if I can land an early
Sowing Salt
. Considering adding Tectonic Edge to
Extirpate
as well. G3 is usually in Tron's favor, but the game can grind out until Tron gets a Mindslaver lock.Infect sucks. Board control at instant speed is good, but it's a tough ride. Haven't tried it since adding fliers and I only recently realized to side in the damn Spellskite. Anyway, getting to the point where I can cast Ultimatum is usually game over, since at that point they're at only a few life and a bolt ends the game.
