I'm pretty invested in this archetype so if you play with this deck at all you should post how the matches are going!

Disclaimer: I'm going to update my own version later on and apply some more thought to it. To follow is my initial musings, that I figured I'd share

I've been playing the UR version the last few months and I'm very much against playing Alhammarret's Archive in general in any of the mill versions. If there's any kind of 5 mana artifact involved it'd be Pyromancer's Goggles since playing it gives you immediate access to Magmatic Insight mana, which of course is great with the goggles. On the other hand it does nothing for Radiant Flames, although this is usually no big loss. And, it's worse in a 3-colour deck.

Fathom Feeder is a sweet addition :)

I think a full 4 Murderous Cut can fit main while all of Ultimate Price moves to the sideboard. The access to Languish is important since Radiant Flames is going to become more restrictive if there's less aggro in the meta. But again, some number of one or both needs to feature in the sideboard as well as main board to up the total sweeper count to 7 or 8...

Lastly, the number and balance of counter spells is going to depend a lot on what you're expecting to see. I expect 9 to be excessive.

You won't be able to delve 7, 4 times in a game for Treasure Cruise. 4 seems like a bit too many to me.

Yea, I'd drop 1 Treasure Cruise for a copy of Ob Nixilis Reignited

Second vote for adding an Ob Nixilis Reignited or 2, adds an alternate win con with life loss, and draws you cards!

@mpeach1 and Prvxis: I originally had Ob Nixilis Reignited in this deck for a while, but after testing a bunch with it, it turned out to be way to slow and just ended up as discard fodder, thanks for the suggestion though!

how about 1 or 2 Day's Undoing to help you recycle and refill your hand. lets you control early on then refill and mill hard the very next turn. without Tormod's Crypt in rotation theres no way that I know to keep it from hitting your opponents graveyards but you might like the strength it gives you for the next turn

I really like this deck. Any thoughts on an Esper version?

nhallen37 says... #11

@tomiscluutch, thanks man! Unfortunately, you really should run red in these decks for cards like Magmatic Insight and Tormenting Voice for your main draw spells so esper would be far inferior, althouh you can probably still pull it off.

Is there anyway to incorporate some life gain into this deck other than the gain life lands? I'm working on a similar build that splashes white for Jeskai Ascendancy instead of Monastery Siege and can't afford to put tap lands in to make the mana base work. What are your thoughts? Excellent deck btw.

This looks a lot like what I've been running. My only thought and what I've come up against is a weakness towards planeswalkers. My numbers are a little different, skewing towards a little more control then draw, mostly shaving down the Magmatic Insight and Treasure Cruise, as well as lowering Murderous Cut because I don't like having that many delve cards. But including 2 main deck Ruinous Path and 1 in the sideboard. Other then that I love this deck, Languish and Radiant Flames keep so many decks down, and it's so nice to flip a Jace and wipe the board.

Try dropping your cruise count down to 3 for another languish or radiant flames. being able to wipe the board is extremely crucial and this deck seems like it would have a bit of trouble as is

Just playtested this. It's really strong, went 1-2 vs my abzan MR deck.

How necessary would you say that Jace is to the deck, and what are your thoughts on Dark Deal and Clever Impersonator.

Dark Deal for some huge draw triggers, and Impersonator for either more than 4 tutelage's or as a way to mirror things like Rhinos, Ulamogs, Walkers, or something?

thewyzman says... #19

I don't play with jace because I don't usually play control, can't afford them, and I think he's overhyped. He's good, and he fits here I think, but he's quite easy to remove as a creature. Dark deal sounds like a fun card to play here that no one else really uses
