This is my own take on the ever so acclaimed Legacy-deck Best.Deck.Ever. by ShadeSlayer17. In short, this deck exercises its right to Bear arms.
"The Bears probably thought he was mentally retarded or something. That's why they left him alone for so long."
- Long lost flavor text to Bear's Companion.
My deck is Modern legal, meaning that a lot of bears from the original deck cited above can't join the party - while some important role-players remain. What basically makes the deck work (at least on a kitchen table) is lots and lots of Grizzly Bears + Muraganda Petroglyphs. Said enchantment often makes a good ol' Grizzly Bears a better draw than the modern filler Ashcoat Bear, due to Grizzly Bear's lack of abilities.
Building this deck, I couldn't believe there are only two literal bears (that is, vanilla 2/2:s for 1G with the creature type Bear) that are legal in the modern format - Grizzly Bears and Runeclaw Bear. Since a lot of bears are lacking in this deck, I run 4 Manamorphose to draw the bears I do have more easily. Also, Timothy Treadwell is, of course, represented in this deck by Bear's Companion. (Why Wizards didn't make him mythic and legendary, I cannot say... Then again, "uncommon" is somehow also fit for Timothy.)
Timothy's presence in the deck unfortunately makes the land base quite expensive. On the plus side, that enables a funny opening:
Turn 1: Temple of Mystery, Scry 1.
Turn 2: Wooded Foothills. Pay 1 life, sac to fetch Steam Vents. Pay 2 life to come in untapped. Cast... Grizzly Bears in yo face! (A regular turn two forest or would also work, though ;).)
I've done that play on Magic Online, giggling to myself about what could be going through my opponents mind. Playing this casually on MTGO gives surprisingly good results too. Maybe this isn't quite the deck to bring to competitive tournaments, but there's also nothing funnier than beating thousand dollar decks in the casual room with a good ol' turn two Grizzly Bears!
In its current form, the deck primarliy lacks tech. Keeping the win-con as bears, any suggestions? :)
