You should try to find room for Titan's Strength , it's especially nasty on Prophetic Flamespeaker and would really work well with your rushing strategy.

i've got them, but what i have found is that having 1 turn of bang hasnt competed with 2 turns of consistancy. i have yet to make Twinflame work well yet however, so swapping out those for Titan's Strength is something i'm no opposed to.

Polis Crusher > Polukranos, World Eater might be a thought. While Polis is a wee bit weaker, his trample gets through being chump blocked, protection from enchantments is infallible, and montrosity to get counters and destroy more enchantments is beautiful.

i like Polukranos, World Eater ability to snipe a few blockers, while i have to agree in a longer match the Polis Crusher would come in handy vs pesky enchantments like Banishing Light or Brain Maggot

I've done more play testing with this, its fairly consistent, taking the lands from 21 to 16 was the best thing I have done to it. No more games of needing cards and drawing lands, foothills and nylea are plenty with the minor ramp from elvish mystic and satyr hedonist. Might even trim off a forest.

instead of Solidarity of Heroes , try Hardened Scales , can be gotten out earlier and is more effective over all if your only place one or two counters at a time

Son-of-Mace i already have 4 of them in there, the solidarity, can be strived to double counters and let a 7/7 or 8/8 creature with 5 counters give or take become massive, i hang onto these to strike for lethal damage most of the time, having a 7/7 phoenix and a 6/6 fntc xenagos, then swining and dropping 4 mana to make them 11/11 and 9/9 is a large chunk for 4 mana, tis proven the test of time as the decks been played.

in standard there are better ways to spend your mana, if you have a 6/6 flier and a 7/7 spend your mana on giving them room to swing not making them bigger, you don't need to hit for 20 on one turn and you dont want to be tapped out when a Hero's Downfall comes at your guys, Ranger's Guile is an amazing card and you should make room for a whole play set of it in the mainboard, if you can trump control and midrange then you will win in standard every tie right now

DrFuzzyGloves says... #9

Son-of-Mace thats a better statement., however, if i hit for 20 in a turn, wouldnt that theoretically negate the purpose of having any other cards, because in most cases 20 damage is lethal. i do however see your point, and i'm not opposed to taking out the 2 solidaritys for 2 more rangers guile.

you could go naya and splash a bunch of white protection, have a decklist here that has all the good removal-removal spells: Anti-removal Heroes,

much of the strength of my deck comes from the card advantage that courser creates. Also, the threats I run are much more than a typical deck can remove, 4x stormbreath, 4x polukranos, 4x polis crusher, 2x sarkhan, etc. I would definitely consider adding some burn as well, Crater's Claws and Lightning Strike are perfect for a deck like this.

Dozing would Flame-Wreathed Phoenix be a semi viable budget replacement for stormbreath? I can get some coursers, at one point I had 3 but traded them for others. This competitive season I have maybe spent 100 on cards, I got lucky with some Kahn's packs and got fetch lands to trade that I wouldn't have used. So I have a fair amount of store credit at the venue I do fnm at. This deck last week left me 1/3. I know it needs time, but I could drop some of the auras for raw creatures. The venue I use has a lot of control.

Generator Servant is better than your satyr hedonthingy

DrFuzzyGloves says... #14

Son-of-Mace i've tried him out, and sometimes he is, other times he isnt, getting the colored mana from Satyr Hedonist compared to the colorless of Generator Servant is what drew me to him.

Son-of-Mace says... #15

Yes but the haste changes the game so much, especially with your deck where your creatures would get haste anyway causing the opponent to completely rethink their call on the tribute

Pal00ka says... #16

If control is high at your meta then getting Stormbreath Dragon asap is integral. He is expensive, but is such an amazing card that you'll use him here and other decks to make his purchase worthwhile.

Mistcutter Hydra is another great anti-control card that should easily be in your SB if not MB.

Sylvan Caryatid is another great ramper who defies control, and again, is expensive but has the same story as SBD

October 27, 2014 8:54 p.m.

DrFuzzyGloves says... #17

Palooka the control thats ran is normally black with hints of other things. the g/b/w control is ran in a few decks, along with the aggro counterpart of the same colors. another player is running the r/u/w, he actually finished 7th at states, good player.

i would love more than anything to drop $60-$80 into 4 stormbreaths, and another $45-$60 into caryatids or the same for a set of coursers, but allas, that wont buy me a happy wife, who would probably not appretiate that. haha.

so i'm trying to find budget substitutes, while caryatid is amaing, i ahve to make due with either Rattleclaw Mystic or Voyaging Satyr . i do have 2 Xenagos, the Reveler on the waydue to finding a good deal on him (worth ~$14 and found him for $8) and Polis Crusher has been playtesting very well in here, so i bumped him up in numbers, i'm also adding some Genesis Hydra as my first playtest left with me with tons of mana, but nothing to spend it on.

Very understandable, gotta keep the wife happy to stay happy. For now the deck looks solid with the alternatives in, but can only get stronger as you acquire the A-listers. Good luck!

Palooka thanks, its playtesting much better since i dropped my win-more deck theme. been trying it vs other mirrors for the msot part to see how it stands up, so far its done very well.

Here's what I found with testing your desk against my G/R monsters deck.

Game 1: You're on the draw but you had no land in your opening hand. I'm not sure if having only 19 land is an accident, but monsters decks, even ones with a low mana curve like yours should have at least 22-24, in my opinion.

A mulligan to 6 brought 2 land, 2 ramp, Bow of Nylea, and Crater's Claws. Not the best but can be workable with lucky draws. First draw was Fanatic of Xenagos, yey.

You were mana screwed after turn 3 and couldn't really recover fast enough before I had Polukranos, Sarkhan, and Ashcloud Phoenix out.

Game 2:Light on mana the first few turns, but made up with lots of ramp after going down a little in life. A few exchanges took place with Bow of Nylea, which I would say is good in the mirror match. After a large monstrosity from Polukranos I was able to win with it and two flyers.

Sometimes it depends on luck with semi-mirror matches. I'd say your deck is okay as it is because of your limited budget, but I definitely recommend adding a few more lands and more evasive threats when you get a chance.

I never see Generator Servant or Ordeal of Nylea in mid-range or monsters. When I was playtesting running 4x Genesis Hydra, I found I was kind of sad to draw him so often. Cutting those down made space for guaranteed threats instead of a potential threat that may or may not hit a target with its ability.

This deck looks pretty sweet for a budget build. +1. I have taken a unique look at RG monsters in Who needs three drops anyways? . If you have a moment, please check it out.

Hardex thanks, I haven't play tested this much, I liked the lower lands in theory, and with those, 3 ramp creatures, foothills and ordeals, I wanted to quickly ramp while clearing lands from the deck to make every draw and genesis cast count so much more. Maybe I can drop 1-2 genesis and 1-2 generators for a few lands for consistency? I can also bring back tormenting voice, in a game when behind you can scrap a genesis if needed for 2 lands. Ordeals also trigger instantly off anything with 2+ +1/+1 counters, so casting a genesis for 4 mana can use this. Also generator into genesis gives him haste and another 2. Using that combo can net you a 3/3 hasted genesis or more on turn 3. With all the ramp and fanatics most of the time you'll net something. I like to drop him for 4 though, cause it covers the whole deck, easily doable on turn 3.

ESTABAUSS I'll take a look once i get off, its still not a budget deck, but at least its viable without spending 400 or more.

I love Gruul! Against aggro I would sideboard in Setessan Tactics rather than Fall of the Hammer

craynor10 i did this for a while, but what i found is that deathtouch is annoying when i want to snipe a little guy with polukranos or something, and the little guy has deathtouch. fall of the hammer doesnt matter with it, although i may sideboard it as well as fall of the hammer for weinie decks.
