Hi! I was randomly browsing the recent decks and actually came across one I have advice for. I've recently found a love for midrange gruul, and I'm seeing some inconsistencies in your deck.

Kalonian Hydra is a fantastic card to center a deck around. The synergy between that hydra and your other monstrous cards is sure to end games. The two cards I'm not big on are Domri Rade and Hammer of Purphoros . The Bow of Nylea that you have in your sideboard synergizes really well with your Kalonian Hydra while also providing insurance against flying and burn. I don't think Hammer of Purphoros 's active is valuable without Purphoros, God of the Forge to make it burn opponents, but that's my opinion. To replace Domri Rade , consider a Savageborn Hydra . You have all the mana tools you need to play it on turn 3 and pump it up fast. With the Hydra and the Bow, you've got a double striker with deathtouch. With Xenagos, The Reveler in play, you can pump him up and play creatures at the same time.

That's about it, though! It's just my opinion!

Just play tested it and Chandra, Pyromaster and Hammer of Purphoros don't do that much, Chandra just gives slight card advantage but other then that was useless, you would be better off putting in an extra Domri Rade and as for Hammer of Purphoros i would run Savageborn Hydra It's a strong card and you generate a good amount of mana, also 4x Stormbreath Dragon is alot

Chandra is much more than card advantage. It moves blockers and does damage over the long game. It forces the mirror.

Hammer makes everything a threat against control and gives you a post-wipe game.

With only 22 creatures, a 4th Domri isn't as effective, and Savageborn is a heavy mana-investment that will maybe do some damage but usually just eats a burn or removal spell. I prefer Mistcutter over it.

I got the name from the quote on Gruul Charm . Which is probably where they got it.

I think you are wrong about the Ghor-Clan Rampager they are very good :) They are meant to be used for bloodrushing, 2 mana for +4/+4 with trample? yes please :)

I use them in my naya, check it out :)

Bramblecrush i totally forgot this card existed. however the gods are Indestructable and they are everywhere atm so i suggest sideboarding Fade into Antiquity it will help against decks that run em, Destructive Revelry is great also. 3x Kalonian Hydra , 2x Polukranos, World Eater

Polukranos is amazing. I had a hard enough time cutting down to 3x. Kalonian Hydra is great if you can attack, but a 5 mana creature with no immediate impact (unless you give it haste) isn't something I'm comfortable running more than 2 of.

Bramblecrush isn't for the gods. It's for all the other pesky permanents running around. Planeswalkers, Detention Spheres, Nykthos, Underworld Connections and Chained to the Rocks lands, Whips, Hammers, Bidents, Spears, Bows, anything else non-creature that might be giving me trouble.

Not a bad deck. In test plays it did well against junk and did decent against rainbow red devotion. It seems i either get flooded out or im stuck with plainswalkers and mizzium mortars lol. Just the luck of the draw i guess. That nykthos doesnt ever seem to be of much use honestly i felt i would rather have had another forest or mountains almost every time it showed up.

Try Mizzium Mortars instead of Anger of the Gods . +1 from me

I already run the mortars. I want something for less than 6 mana to clear devotion boards. like against the red and blue-based devotion decks.

I used to splash blue when i turned my RG devotion into RUG and used Prophet of Kruphix to flash things in. Cyclonic Rift was my secondary spell. You could try Clan Defiance , Gruul Charm , or hell, Street Spasm . Forget the board clear and just bash face!

Burning-Tree Emissary is a 4 of in any gruul deck

Only if you're able to cast things off her. There aren't enough cards that can utilize the extra mana optimally.

why Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ? this isn't a devotion deck

December 17, 2013 10:25 a.m.

Kamotz says... #16

That's true, but usually I have enough colored mana symbols in play that a single Nykthos nets me a good amount of mana for something like an early monstrous or additional pump effects. At worst it's a colorless land, which really doesn't hurt me all that much anyway. And the once-in-a-while effect makes it worth running over an additional basic.

I don't understand the point of the Ember Swallower , wouldn't an Arbor Colossus be more effective?

Kamotz says... #18

If it were a 4-drop, I'd go for it. Still it's not a bad idea.

I mean. Yes. Absolutely. You're welcome.

Your 4-slot is pretty heavy, what with the Ghor-Clan Rampager , Ember Swallower , Polukranos, World Eater , and Xenagos, The Reveler . Personally, I would recommend dropping the last 2 Ember Swallower s for an Armed / Dangerous or the Gruul Charm s you have sitting in the maybeboard. Both have served me well in my own decks.

December 25, 2013 2:30 p.m.

Kamotz says... #23

Ghor-Clan is really just. 2-drop pump spell. You don't really play it unless you absolutely must.

December 25, 2013 2:42 p.m.

GoldenDemon says... #24

Hm, good point. And with Domri you wouldn't really want any more non-creatures in there... :TI gave you bad suggestions. Looking at your ideas for where to take the deck next, I'd still recommend dropping Ember Swallower for Arbor Colossus .

December 25, 2013 2:46 p.m.

Kamotz says... #25

I'm actually considering moving the Mistcutter Hydra s to the sideboard instead of the Skylasher s (depending on what I expect to see from my local meta when I move back). Leaving 3 spots in the mainboard. I like what Keisuke Sato did with his Gruul deck and I'm looking to take inspiration from there. Though I don't like 4x Domri with just 25 creatures, and I've had very mixed luck with Clan Defiance .

My problem with Arbor Colossus is more the mana investment. It definitely helps against some big flyers, but the 5-mana triple-green cost makes me hesitant.
