Androgynous archer kicking spells and taking games.

I love commanders who get you to play cards you normally never would, so forcing us to play a lot of kicker cards is an exciting challenge. I built Hallar and they turn out to be a lot of fun, a strange mix of spellslinging and voltron stompy. Hallar is cheap, efficient, has trample built in, and their ability hitting all opponents really shines as a way to win. The deck can gain small amounts of advantage over a game, and with enough time to build up resources and the help of mana doublers and effects like Mana Geyser you can have big turns of kicking 3+ spells that close out the game.

While we don't get new kicker spells very often, Hallar also benefits from +1/+1 counter synergy, mana ramp, card-draw-based-on-power, and graveyard recursion.

This Build vs. Other Potential Builds Show

This build is currently pretty Voltron/spellslinger, but there could be a build of Hallar that could go wide with Saprolings and other tokens given all the kicker spells that make them. My initial version leaned on elf mana base, since Hallar is an elf and there are some good elf tribal things that work with them, such as Joraga Warcaller . Ultimately that plan crumples too easily to boardwipes. Hallar can be a one-elf army and the playing of mana dorks seemed like I was asking for card disadvantage.

The name of the game here is piling +1/+1 counters on Hallar, kicking spells to blaze all your opponents, and swinging for the fences. We want to protect Hallar, ramp when convenient, kick spells for maximum value, and draw cards. Maximum value means holding back if we think Hallar could get some more counters first. We run all the lands which add counters and they are in general all worth delaying a cast of Hallar for.

Current challenges - How many kicker spells to run? There are several kicker pump spells we could run to lean even further in the Voltron angle. That would increase our chances of killing someone with Hallar attacks, but is that needed, given the 'all opponent' damage we're dealing? Should we lean instead on that damage, running cards like Torbran, Thane of Red Fell and Dictate of the Twin Gods ?

More testing is needed to feel out the holes in the deck's game plan. Running kicker spells means we are playing a lot of subpar cards that are not bad, but not optimal. The deck is therefore really reliant on ramp and on Hallar for being a payoff for kicking (since none of the other kicker payoffs, such as Saproling Infestation give us enough payoff to warrant a deck slot.)

We're going back to Zendikar and that means new kicker spells! So far several have been spoiled that warrant inclusion, such as Inscription of Abundance , Vastwood Surge and possibly Taunting Arbormage and Tajuru Paragon (depending on the build). Vine Gecko is an interesting enabler and plays in the +1/+1 counter space. Also exciting are the new cycle of Spell//Lands; I was already thinking the deck needed to run more land as kicker is mana hungry and we never want to miss land drops, but the deck also wants effective cards since our kicker and pump spells are not the most versatile. The Spell//Lands like Bala Ged Recovery  , Khalni Ambush  , and Valakut Awakening   are all worth playing, and should help up our land count without hurting our spell count. Thanks, Wizards!
