Hapatra, Infect Beat Down Queen

Commander / EDH BG (Golgari) Infect

pribdev

Deck:

Always been of fan of golgari commanders, so I thought I'd have my try on brewing up a build for Hapatra, Vizier of Poison. I also wanted my try at the deck before EDHrec influences my decisions and who doesn't like -1/-1 counters?

The objective of the deck is to attack with our commander and other infect creatures, then have deathtouch snakes to deteriorate others from attacking us. To finish most games you will kill your opponents with infect by either having evasive creatures like Whispering Specter, pumping our creatures with cards like Stonewood Invocation , or making our creatures unblock-able with Profane Command and Key to the City. Infect creatures in general are out classed by most creatures in the format, so we run only the best infect creatures with our small variety of choices. The deck may not have a large amount of infect creatures (only 12), but the deck runs protection effects in Heroic Intervention and recursion effects such as Wrenched Confluence and Meren of Clan Nel Toth . If this goes south the deck always has the back-up plan of jamming Craterhoof Behemoth or resolving Rise of the Dark Realms to win the game.

The rest of the deck is there to support our role as infect beat down. We need our snakes as blockers, without these little guys players will over run us with huge creatures. We have cards with wither and -1/-1 synergy to pump them out. Carnifex Demon, Black Sun's Zenith, and Midnight Banshee are just gas. They produce a snake for EACH creature on the field. We also have some great cards to work with the snakes when we're not using them. Evolutionary Leap and Cryptolith Rite to turn our snakes into cards and mana to further advance ourselves. But to find all these pieces we need to get through our deck, and lucky we're in some of the best colors to do that. Tutors in black and the ramp in green to thin our deck. Card drawing might be a little lacking, but I tried to find the best engines with cards like Necropentence, Deathreap Ritual , and Lifecrafter's Bestiary.

Strengths: (Predicted)

The commander is very cheap, so casting her on turn two will almost always happen. This means you can get snakes early and are not as hurt when players run single targeted removal on our commander. The deck also runs recursion effects like said above, so as long as your threats don't get exiled you can bring them back. Lastly the deck has a lot of "Oh I win" cards with some snakes and a card like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes .

Weakness: (Prediction)

Like most decks the deck is hurt when the board gets wiped. It can rebuild quickly with its commander, but losing your board to a well timed Wrath of God can set you back, so play your hand with caution. The deck also has a lack of fliers so watch out for those flying spaghetti monsters Emrakul, the Promised End. And lastly the deck lacks removal, with a sever lack of enchantment hate. You may want to increase this if your players run enchantment decks.

Stats:

  1. Infect Creatures: 12

  2. Card Draw: 4-7

  3. Pump Spells: 5

  4. Ramp: 8

  5. Removal spells: 3-6

  6. Recursion: 5-6

Review:

The deck itself is a start great build for this commander. The deck has a few cards that I on the fence about such as: Cauldron of Souls, Splendid Agony and which pump spells to use. I also might want to add more ramp cards. This deck is in progress so if you have any cards you feel that would be great for this deck suggest them! And any cards you think are bad or do not fit inform me as well, I'm happy to hear peoples ideas with this commander.

Budget:

Yes the deck is expensive, but I have most of the cards listed so I put them in the deck. I feel that you could honestly make this deck pretty budget friendly by cutting the multiple $20 cards like Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and replace them with more budget freely cards. Most infect creatures are pretty cheap, not including Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon, so if there is some interest I might try to do a budget one around $100.

Overall I think this deck will be a ton of fun to play, so get your -1/-1 counters ready and see if we can count to 10!
