Mass Calcify , Planar Cleansing or Garruk, Apex Predator out of the sideboard against monsters and other big midrange decks?

First off, awesome deck, I'm always a fan of the Junk. I have been running one myself for the past month or so before it gets rocked by rotation, although mine is more of a creature beatdown style (my last day to play it too tonight). I would advise against Planar Cleansing because you don't want to snap your many enchantments or Elspeth. Mass Calcify on the other hand would be a great option since it only kills your Courser (who cares at that point). I have had success with Garruk in mine too. A lot of the time I don't need him, so I keep him as a 1-of mainboard, but when he does drop, the opponent always throws a hissy, it never fails lol. I have yet to Ultimate him as I usually win within a turn or two of him dropping if it takes that long, but his other three abilities are always helpful. I will say I do not like to see him in my opening hand though, I like to top deck him after I've done been Thoughtseized and Downfalled out. Ofc there's not much I can do about that, but know that you will be very slow with him in your starting hand. Also, needless to say I'm sure, he gets sided out any time I face a deck that's faster or as fast as mine. Good luck!

Thanks CrovaxTheCursed! In all three cases I'm talking about bringing in the card from the sideboard for the midrange/walker heavy matchup. If i went Planar Cleansing , I would switch the ratio of Banishing Light /Hero's Downfall from 3:3 to 2:4 and I would only play it in cases where board state shifts against me. What I like is it kills walkers, but it does kill my dudes ands doesn't hit Nissa land animations. But I think Mass Calcify works better as it only hits my coursers and wurm tokens, but kills animate lands by Nissa and other tokens for a pretty good board wipe. However, my opponents walkers survive, which means unless I have dudes to swing at the walkers after the wipe to clear the board (or can just attack FTW), it's at best a tempo play. Garruk, is much more flexible answer for a wider range of scenarios but doesn't seem like he'd save my butt if I'm behind (not sure).
That's really what I'm looking for a "save my butt" card to bring in against a walker heavy or high midrange creature matchup. The 2nd Angel of Serenity does that out of the side, but I want one more 6-7 CMC card to bring in for the very top of my curve. Whether that card should be Mass Calcify or Garruk, Apex Predator is the real question.

P.S. Ashen Rider is also a possibility, because I can also abuse it with Whip of Erebos and Angel of Serenity

Well, if you're looking for that curve-topping card that will get you back in the race after falling behind, I do not think Garruk is that card. He's more of a "hey, I have a pretty stable board and I can probably kill you in a couple turns, but here's Garruk so you die now". I believe that's what they refer to as win-more? Not sure. Anyway, Garruk is definitely not going to win the game for you if you don't have a supporting cast on the field. Sure, he can make an immediate impact in almost every matchup as soon as he drops, but if you don't have anything to back him up, he's not worth a tap out on turn 7. In light of your explanations of Mass Calcify vs Planar Cleansing , that almost warrants at least one of each in the side. I feel like one of those two (whichever is relevant at the time) would effect the board state more than Garruk. I know that seems like an umm...duh? kind of statement, but I'm referring to the following plays after the wipe (for you and the opposition). See, you have reanimation ability and lots of synergy to do so with your creature base; however, Planar Cleansing poops on your reanimation unless you've been holding Whip for after the wipe. That was my main reasoning behind Calcify over Cleansing. And to the point of Ashen Rider , if you were to run him, I'd say it would either need some ramp, or a way to easily pitch him to the Yard. 8CMC is just so dang high, although you do have a lot of Lifegain so you may be fine with grinding until you hit 8 lands, but seems like a risky include without further support of him. Anyway, I hope my jaw jackin' was at least a little helpful.

Thanks CrovaxTheCursed, for the matchups in question 8 CMC is not too high. Those games would frequently go long as each deck struggles to command the board state either through monsters or walkers. We're talking mono-green dev, R/G monsters, BUG walkers, and R/G/B. But Garruk, Apex Predator
wouldn't be without any suppoprt, my deck has that. It's just that coursers, archangels, and elspeth tokens, can have trouble with animated lands (etc) -depending on how the game has progressed. I don't know.

Out of standard now, but I see green and white and tokens, and that makes me happy. +1!

yes ComradeJim270, long out of standard now. But a favorite of mine to play, which I still occasionally play casually. Since I recently got into commander, I'm thinking about making an EDH version too.

Cool idea. The first thing that comes to mind if you do that is Ghave, Guru of Spores as a commander. Seems fun!
