Haunted House: A Horde Magic Deck

I fell in love with the flavor of Innistrad and took inspiration from the Zombie Horde format to make the Haunted House horde deck. Basically imagine you and your friends are about to take your favorite decks to a haunted house, trying to survive and hold out against endless spirits and surprises at every turn! The rules and gameplay for this format are attributed to Peter Knudson and the description here is copied from this link. This Haunted House deck contains 60 nontoken cards as displayed in the deck list. The remaining 40 is made up of 20 Spirit tokens, 10 Spirit Warrior tokens, 4 Horror tokens, 3 Bat tokens, and 3 Rat tokens. These 40 creature tokens are represented by Storm Crow in the deck list.

Participants

  • Horde Magic is divided up into two factions: The Horde deck (the deck that runs automatically) and the Survivors (the players). For this deck, the Horde deck is the Haunted House, and the Survivors are the Visitors.

Win conditions

  • The Haunted House wins if the Visitors' group life total is reduced to zero or below.The Visitors win if the Haunted House has no cards in its library, no cards in its hand, and no creatures on the battlefield.

Rules for the Haunted House

  • The Haunted House has no player, it pilots itself.

  • The Haunted House's turn starts by revealing cards from the top of its library until a non-token card is revealed. All revealed tokens are then cast. The revealed non-token card is cast. Then, if applicable, the Haunted House casts any cards that can be cast from its graveyard as well as any cards it has in its hand.

  • All creatures controlled by the Haunted House have Haste and "This creature must attack each turn if able."

  • For spells that were cast by the Haunted House, any instance of "target player" or "target opponent" always targets a member of the Visitors. All other choices that the Haunted House makes for instances of "target", "you choose", and the like are decided by the Visitors. For example, if Night Terrors was cast by the Haunted House, a member of the Visitors (chosen by the Visitors) reveals his or her hand, and the Visitors collectively decide which nonland card to exile from that player's hand. Another example is if the Haunted House casts Ghostly Possession . A creature of the Visitors' choice is enchanted with Ghostly Possession .

  • The Haunted House has an infinite amount of mana at all times. The Haunted House activates once per turn each ability of the cards it owns of which its abilities are mana abilities and can be activated. For example, if Silent Departure is in the Haunted House's graveyard, and Ludevic's Test Subject   is on the battlefield under the Haunted House's control, it will cast Silent Departure from the graveyard using Flashback on a creature of the Visitors' choosing, exiling Silent Departure , and it will also put a hatchling counter on Ludevic's Test Subject  , because these are both mana abilities that are able to be activated by The Haunted House.

  • The Haunted House must obey the rules of cards in play, such as with Haunted Plate Mail. It will only activate Haunted Plate Mail's ability once per turn when it has no other creatures in play. The Haunted House casts cards for their Madness cost if able, such as when it discards a card from Geier Reach Sanitarium.

  • The Haunted House has no life total. Damage dealt to the Haunted House causes that many cards from the top of its library to be put into its graveyard.

Rules for the Visitors

  • The Visitors can choose to take preparation turns to decrease the difficulty of the gameplay. Preparation turns are taken as normal except you skip the Haunted House's turn, and the Visitors cannot attack or cast spells targeting the Haunted House.

  • Like in Two-Headed Giant, the Visitors are a team and all take their turn simultaneously. The Visitors attack and block as a team.

  • Each Visitor contributes 20 life to the group life total.

Adjusting the difficulty of The Haunted House

  • Depending upon the number of players and/or the type of decks being used by the Visitors, it may be necessary to adjust some of the aspects of the game in order to set the difficulty of the game to a preferable level. The following are ways to adjust the difficulty and power level of The Haunted House:

  • Adjust the number of turns in which the Visitors have to prepare.

  • Adjust the amount of life each of the Visitors contributes to the team.

  • Exile a random portion of the Haunted House's deck prior to the first turn.

  • Card Selection during the Haunted House deck construction and/or a sideboard.

  • Allow tokens to remain in the graveyard instead of ceasing to exist.

  • Allow or disallow the Visitors to attack the Haunted House during their preparation turns.

  • Adjust the token to non-token ratio.
