Yeah the desert subtype is mostly just flavor I think. They really failed at making it relevant, which is a shame. But endless sands specifically is really cool because you can put Hazezon on layaway with it before his trigger can remove the tokens. It'll be better in my deck where he's not the general because you'd probably rather just put him in the command zone.

Yeah, I'm wondering about that. It'd certainly be sweet to cash in the first round of tokens then pop him back out on the cheap, but I'm unclear on whether or not you have the opportunity to put him back in the zone if he's exiled and the land is destroyed/exiled.

FenIsABasicSwamp says... #4
Yeah you couldn't move him from exile into the command zone. You can only choose to apply the replacement effect to move him to the command zone when he would change zones. So if you send him to exile then that's where he is unless you Pull from Eternity, which actually seems like cool flavor for the deck.

Alright, I've finally got a reason to put my beloved but estranged Desert back into this deck! EternalBrewmaster, when do you plan on pulling the trigger on all your HOU cards? Think they'll drop in price any time soon?

I got sidetracked by Neheb, the Eternal because I've always wanted to build a burn deck and here it is. I'm refining it over the next few weeks and have to post it on TO. I'll try and get to my Dune deck next probably. The HOU cards should probably bottom out next weekend while they're in standard. Nothing is too expensive I don't think.

Are you going to add the other color-producing utility deserts from HOU?

What I've got here so far is as many as I think I'll possibly put in. The Red and Green ones seem much less useful in this deck. Maaaaybe the Man-land one, but I also want to make room for Dust Bowl and Flagstones of Trokair... I need to start playing 150-card commander.

I feel you. 150 cards is what I want to play too.

Rolling Back the Deserts :(
I'm keeping just a few with the most overt Dune imagery, but in the end, the desert experiment hurt the 3-color mana base too much for my liking.
Taking out Hour of Promise as well, putting in Containment Priest. A flavor upgrade and a return to the theme of resource denial and oppression that this deck inflicts upon folks.

chadsansing check out VietMoneys profile for our discussion of that and my alter of DBN that Im using as the general. Its kind of meant to be a mashup of Shaihulud and Leto II.

Also chadsansing check out my teferi deck for another Dune-themed EDH deck if youre interested.

Thanks chadsansing! While this is probably the weakest of my decks, I truly love it the most. As EternalBrewmaster's comments indicate, there are many of the dune faithful here on TO. In fact, someone's assembling a list ("folder") of Dune-Themed decks that you can find over in the sidebar here. I don't have anything to do with it, but I'm all for spicing up my favorite game ;)

And I'll be watching the Dune-Brood deck with great interest. The flavor is stupidly awesome, considering that "Water" () is the only thing missing from the color identity!

Yeah I dont think I mentioned before but my instructions to the artist who altered DBN were to not use any blue paint in any part of the art too :) much flavor.

I dont know if anyones mentioned, but Blind Obedience can be played here because reminder text isnt a part of color identity

Hey ScionLocke. Thanks for checking out the deck!
I actually ran Blind Obedience in the deck for a while. The Dune flavor is pretty on point, and staxy effects like that were really useful when this deck moved a little slower. Ultimately, however, the card just didn't make a big enough impact to make the cut.
Urabrask the Hidden still grants a little bit of the same effect, but with the all-important addition of enabling haste.

Novablast Wurm, Grothama, All-Devouring. They don't blend in your deck but it's the closest thing to Shai Hulud, I can think of.

A visit from the God_Emperor himself, Bless the Maker!
Indeed, my closest approximation of the Old Grandfather of the Desert in this deck is Ulvenwald Hydra, but Magic has a few flavorful ones in its history, most notably Greater Sandwurm. Like you said, however, they just can't carry water in this deck from a strategic point of view. The best of these would probably be Sandwurm Convergence. This card makes me so sad, because it is so unnecessarily nerfed. 8CMC is ridiculous for this effect. At that cost, it should have been creatures without flying. Otherwise, 6 or 7 CMC seems much more fair. Alas...
Anyhow. Thanks for checking out the deck, amigo. Throw an upvote for the faithful my way and keep spreading that Dune love!

This may have been mentioned already, but Sandwurm Convergence fits the theme perfectly. I really like this deck, well done sir!

any over performers you are finding in this deck in your play? the deck is very different then my list and it seems to have more scattered win cons where mine is pretty one dimensional (though i love that about mine). have you tried Mentor of the Meek, Regal Force? I love those in my decks, they tend to be super good. additionally I find Dragonlord Dromoka and Conqueror's Flail to be fantastic due to thier Grand Abolisher like effects. they tend to enable hard to stop wins.

Hey joshthor! Indeed, my list looks a lot different than most because of the constraints of flavor and my emphasis on the Dune theme. I ran Mentor of the Meek in an early build (he's actually totally on point, flavor-wise), but he came out as my list of creatures got shorter and shorter. Obviously, he compliments Hazezon's ability, but the deck has to run without Hazezon a lot of the time (lots of countermagic flying around my meta). Obviously, that would make Dragonlord Dromoka that much more useful, but a dragon is just a bit too far out, flavorwise.

To answer your question though, Knight of the Reliquary has been an excellent new addition to this deck, though she's a bit specific to the weird Lands theme I have going on.
Erratic Portal was a super useful card in a more straightforward, Hazezon-centric version of this deck, as is Shields of Velis Vel, which is a really funny Instant-speed trick if someone removes Hazezon. For best results, play it the turn you play Hazezon then sac him!

I'm with JoeNathan37. Can't call this a Dune deck without Sandwurm Convergence. I think you strongly favor practicality over flavor, but if you're gonna make a "theme" deck why not dive right into Flavortown? Seems like you are not allowing your fears to pass over and through you.
Mimic Vat is a neat card and could represent an axolotl tank flavor-wise. Pithing Needle could represent a Gom Jabbar. Exoskeletal Armor could be a stillsuit, and the flavor text definitely fits Fremen ideology.
I feel like a Dune themed deck could be made that would not require logical gymnastics for the Duneness to be detectable, it just wouldn't function as well as what you made. Personally I'd rather win with a Dune deck than a Hazezon deck.

I am moved by your words, onehitterquiter!
All of these suggestions are amazing and further proof of the need for 150-card commander, ha ha.

Absolutely! I too have been watching these developments closely. Endless Sands and the three cycling deserts will be going in, as well as the so-called Magus of the Crucible. I haven't been too thrilled with the Desert Synergies so far though; maybe the two-land tutor?
