He Protecc and He Attacc, Competitive Scion Combo

Commander / EDH Combo Dragons

shicari

This deck is inspired by getting demolished playing what I thought was a pretty strong mono black reanimator deck at my LGS my first time back. My solution... Scion of the Ur-Dragon ! One my favorite cards, but too combo-ey for online play, and too strong for my casual play group can finally find a home in my collection.

So how to build him? Well my first combo deck (and maybe my favorite) was Xantcha, Sleeper Agent with Worldgorger. I have all of the pieces already and the combo itself just makes me happy, so I'll center around that.

World Gorger Combo Package: Worldgorger Dragon Animate Dead Necromancy Dance of the Dead Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius

Another big plus with Worldgorger is that my combo pieces are extremely useful if my combo is invalidated. No Worldgorger? How about any other dragon in my library.

Let's get another combo that doesn't rely on the graveyard. My playgroup doesn't play much graveyard hate, but they might wisen up after this deck. For this combo we'll do Aggravated Assault and Savage Ventmaw . I like this combo because, once again, each piece is fairly useful on its own, particularly the Ventmaw.

Beledros Witherbloom can be great for sneaky plays. Being able to untap all of your lands can help enable combos, although you won't be able to use the mana for extra activations, it can cut the cost for Necromancy for a sneaky win, or leave you with enough mana up to help Scion through 2 or 3 removal attempts.

Not only does Scion combo, but he can also attacc. Take that annoying control player out easy with Skitheryx, the Blight Dragon and Moltensteel Dragon . Or, if Skittles is already out of your library, you can use Atarka, World Render for CMR damage, costing some extra life. Also Hellkite Tyrant to steal that mana rock or stax piece... Or Nicol Bolas to crush the blue players hand.

He attacc, but he also protecc. Silumgar, the Drifting Death and Dragonlord Ojutai give hexproof at instant speed, fun stuff. Piru, the Volatile is a brand new card that works perfect as a removal deterrent and a surprise lifegain burst after you used Beledros or Moltensteel one too many times. Also running the old faithful protection pieces of Lightning Greaves , Swiftfoot Boots and Heroic Intervention . These might be overkill, but can be the reason I combo off at turn 4 instead of 6.

The last thing we need to get this deck running are ways of getting our pieces back into the deck incase we get unlucky. Scroll Rack is so good in this deck. With all 10 fetches it becomes a Lim-Dul's Vault trigger once per turn. Great for shuffling drawn dragons back in and finding those combo pieces. Wheel of Sun and Moon feels counter intuitive, but it's so good with Scion that I have to run it. Play it early, forget Worldgorger, and just reanimate your opponents graveyards while enjoying that Skittles/Tyrant/Bolas trigger every turn. Or play it with Worldgorger already in the grave and have reliable hexproof on Scion while you dig for your enchantment. Also Elixir of Immortality incase things go horribly wrong.

Lastly I play a last ditch graveyard package with Yawgmoth's Will , Underworld Breach , Jeska's Will and Dark Ritual . Got to the end game and no plan left? Just play all of your failed attempts one last time. This is more of a pet card package, and should maybe be replaces with Niv-Mizzet, Parun , Curiosity , Keen Sense and Ophidian Eye but recursion is fun.
