I feel like Elspeth, Sun's Champion would be better in here than Stormbreath Dragon or Aurelia, the Warleader ..her tokens just feed purphoros and her other abilities combo nicely with this deck too :) Also helps give devotion to heliod

Not true, for a few reasons:

Elspeth doesn't deal the damage that aurelia or stormbreath can, because elspeth takes a little while to get up to speed, and is thus vulnerable for a bit. I can't be bothered to protect elspeth (otherwise, this would be superfriends) so I would rather go with Aurelia and Stormbreath who already protect themselves with their evasion and pro-white. Aurelia also gives just as much devotion to heliod as elspeth, so that isn't really an issue. Look at it this way: If you are gonna lose next turn unless you can swing hard and hastily, will an elspeth save you? Nope. Will an aurelia or stormbreath save you? Yes.

The other reason is that there are only two of purphoros (he is here for his dragon breath and occasional creature trigger) so the combo wouldn't happen that often. Wincons with 1 card are better than wincons with 2. I don't need another removal engine, the spear has me covered.

Lastly, I don't even have any of her, but if I did, I wouldn't run her. She is better in an esper superfriends or the like.

I love it. Quite cool actually i like the stability offered by the creature control while you stack up hard to remove board presence follow it all up with a vicious swift kick in the pants. +1

@Felixlives

Thank you kind sir. Its also really funny if you've controlled enough for the past few turns to have enough devotion for heliod to grow a pair, which is actually a huge problem for the opponent sometimes.

What do you think about aetherling? My friend just built a u/w control deck with aetherling and he is pretty awesome in a control deck. He can easily be blinked out for a board wipe or if someone is trying to pop him and he can be an unblockable fatty. I think i will tell my friend about considering red this has way better win cons. He played it last night in a 4 player game and aside from aetherling his biggest threat was jace milling for ten every turn but more importantly drawing fire away from himself. Control is tricky in a multiplayer setting fortunatly for him i too was playing a control deck and had Vapor Snag on an Isochron Scepter that was making it real difficult for anyone to get a foot on the ground.

@Felixlives

I think AEtherling is nice as a win con, but only himself alone... wincons that are enchantments help a lot here, especially with sphere of safety. The sphere is the only thing that allows this deck to compete in multiplayer. I personally don't like aetherling because everyone sideboards against him. Can't sideboard much against an aurelia or stormbreath. In short, aetherling does not belong in all control decks.

RDW With Mutavault just destroys this deck, UNLESS you pull 1 of the 2 Blind Obedience after sideboarding. Also the Esper Control and Rakdos Midrange matchup are highly in there favor. You have no early creatures to block against aggro decks so Mutavault + burn spells is just death cause wiping the board or removing creatures on your turn does nothing. I would suggest some Yoked Ox and/or Frostburn Weird , but thats just against control against Rakdos and Esper your probobly just going to loose, and idk about your FNM but those two decks are EVERYWHERE in my area. I would suggest two Jace, Memory Adept in sideborad for control matchups and maybe two Pithing Needle . That said I do like the deck idea it seems fun and different than other Control I've seen. Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Anger of the Gods seems good in this kind of deck as well. Just some suggestions. +1 on the overall deck idea though.

I have already played both RDW and rakdos midrange with this, and this does fairly well, even without sideboarding. Chained to the Rocks is invaluable against them because I can rid myself RDW's early rakdos cackler and shut down their madcap skills, as well as wipe them effectively with a verdict with their ptobsble overextension. Rakdos midrange also can't do much because rakdos has absolutely no way to deal with enchantments(sphere of safety) or indestructibility. Once assemble the legion is out against either of these, its only a matter of time.

What does RDW mean?

hochmaster says... #16

Red Deck Wins. Basically, play hasty bodies for the first four turns using things like Ash Zealot with things like Madcap Skills, titan's strength, and lots of burn. They usually peter out by turn 6 or so.

You beat Rakdos Midrange? You have 1 answer to a Stormbreath Dragon which they can get out on turn 4 with a keyrune. If you don't pull a Verdict you just die and if they are smart they will Thoughtseize that from you or just Slaughter Games. This deck could really use some card draw. Jace, Architect of Thought would be very good here.

@Sideslip12

I have Syncopate and Azorius Charm ... even if I don't have those, I can probably just take 4 and chain it the next turn. It really isn't that big of a deal because if I went first, sphere of safety shuts their haste down and I probably won't have lost any health by that point either.

That and boom sphynx rev replentishes your hand and health.

October 13, 2013 3:54 p.m.

Sideslip12 says... #20

Azorius Charm and Chained to the Rocks what do those do against a pro white creature? Your only answer is a Supreme Verdict . They run like 4 different spot removal spells so your dragon dies as soon as it hits the field to try and block.

Oh shit I forgot about pro white... well, I could still just counter him or lock him down with the sphere. Besides, if I was having that much of a problem with a stormbreath, I would sideboard in celestial flare and blind obedience. Also, nobody except me runs stormbreath in my meta, most are either RDW or BUG. The only rakdos midrange that I play against runs Sire Of Insanity against me, and I usually just counter that crap.

October 13, 2013 4:40 p.m.

Sideslip12 says... #22

Once again Sphere is white and blue so doesn't work against stormbreath but yeah looks like different decks are being played in your area so what works for you might not work for others such as myself. Rakdos midrange that doesnt use stormbreath seems bad to me though, too many control decks running around to not use 4 of, But to each thier own. Good luck with the deck and if you keep winning no need to change anything I guess. Cheers.

Sphere of safety, not detention sphere. And thank you for the suggestions, I added some syncopates for when shit hits the fan.

Not just for the sake of returning and potentially resetting their board, but against tokens, Cyclonic Rift is a kill spell. When an early threat comes out before you have access to seven mana, its a two drop instant speed bounce.

Also, what about Blind Obedience ? I know rdw suffered quite the blow this rotation, but by playing an additional white with each spell, you can recover from all of those shocklands and drain them of their own life. Plus, it will only increase the amount of lands they'll have to tap with Sphere of Safety .

October 13, 2013 8:37 p.m.

hochmaster says... #25

@ldvatwa

Cyclonic rift is expensive on the overload... I would rather have a nice spell counter or burn spell in its place. Blind Obedience is already in the sideboard for RDW, but mainboard may not be a bad idea.
