From my experience with the card, card:Ranger's Guile isn't really that good, at least based off what I was told about how it worked. From what I was told, if you cast it in response to a spell cast on Gloom Surgeon , the targeting of that spell has already been done, so Guile doesn't save it in that way. And if you play it first, your opponent can respond with something and kill Gloom Surgeon anyway before Guile resolves.

On another note, I was looking through some of my old cards and I saw Valor Made Real , and I immediately thought of this deck. Would be a funny card to use for defensive purposes.

What about Increasing Confusion to mill yourself just that much more?

@nemesis101: card:Ranger's Guile played in response to a spell targeting the Gloom Surgeon makes the Surgeon an illegal target and the effect does nothing. That's what the ruling has been for years.

Valor Made Real is off color and is not standard ;). Increasing Confusion takes away from the self-exile aspect ;).

@RousseausDisciple You see, that's what I thought, but when I tried that at an FNM a judge was called and he said that it didn't work that way because targeting already happened. my bad I guess. :P

Fair enough. I guess it's my bad too :P.

I honestly don't know, i think I'll post the question up on rules section here and see what others have to say. it is possible the judge was wrong.

Ok, so according to basically everyone except that judge, card:Ranger's Guile works the way you're using it, so sorry for the unhelpful post. :P

Yeah, if something gains hexproof after being targeted by an opponent, it becomes an illegal target and the spell is countered on the stack.

Rest in Peace will always make sure that Misthollow Griffin is in exile, but you'd have to add white. I don't know of any other cards other than Deathrite Shaman , which could really help a lot.

Why Revenge of the Hunted ? Would you cast that on an enemy? Or is it for Misthollow Griffin ?
