In the Kingdom of Valdemar; in the land of Velgarth; Heralds and their magical equine companions defend the innocent from the pressing threat of tyranny and dark-magery.

This deck is a pet project, inspired by the wonderful series of books set in Mercedes 'Misty' Lackey's universe of Velgarth.

If they were to be placed on the Colour Pie, Heralds are undeniably White-Blue aligned:

Morality, Order, Logic, Peace and Omniscience...

Magic supports the flavour of a Velgarth-themed herald's-control deck surprisingly well too; Elspeth, the young herald and heir to the throne is highly similar in role and appearance to the planeswalker Elspeth, Knight Errant. The sanctified Herald-Mage Vanyel Askeveron, born 500 years before Elspeth's time, sacrificed himself to save the land - and much like the sanctified Geist of Traft, Vanyel's benign spirit has manifested in the realm to protect the land's northernmost border. Valdemar has many religions, but most prevalent amongst Heralds is worship of 'The Lady', a deity whom protects wayfaring travellers and blesses those tasked with defending the kingdom by imparting knowledge of their ancestors; much like how Ephara, the Lady of the polis welcomes new Heralds to their duty by granting the additional knowledge they'll need to fulfil their role.Well-meaning magic comes at a heavy price, excessive use of mana-nodes can either wear-out the Herald, or wear-out the environment around them. Defensive magic is significantly less taxing, shields (both mental and physical) can be constructed with little effort and impenetrably deny a majority of offences.

Heralds are duty-bound to seek out any who plot against Valdemar's people; Dark-magics incidentaly, use sacrificial blood-magic, a readily avaliable source in the vulnerable masses of Valdemar's steadholders. So in response, a most effective method of neutralising dark-mages is to learn their intention, and then invalidate it.

The legendary gift of god, wielded by any of Valdemar's protectors can revoke an enemy's recourse. Meddling Heralds are specially trained to reconnoitre, remand the foe's efforts, and then remove the possibility of a repeated attack.
