Concept:

Soldier themed, heavy emphasis on the Greco-Roman flavor of the Theros block. The whole idea is to get lots of creatures out, and swing often, hopefully with enough battlefield presence (using soldiers and tokens) that I can outnumber blockers. And even if I can't, that's where Anax and Cymede come in. Trample for the whole army!

True Commanders:

Anax and Cymede command the army like they command the polis -- with power and effectiveness, applied with precision and cunning.

A great Heroic effect on a creature cheap enough that they should spend most of the game on the battlefield, barring any shenanigans.

Heroic Soldiers:

Veterans like Akroan Crusader, Favored Hoplite, Benalish Commander, Captain of the Watch, and Phalanx Leader are the standouts in the Akroan Legion, leading the larger forces (Assemble the Legion, Launch the Fleet, Mobilization) to victory.

In addition to their peerless commanders, the Legion also has the favor of the gods. Soldiers who prove themselves in battle are bolstered by divine augmentation. (Gods Willing, Titan's Strength)

The whole idea is cheap creatures that double as both utility and aggro (mostly through the Heroic keyword), bolstered by cheap instants and other targeting spells, supported by soldier token generation.

Legionaries from Beyond the Battlefield:

Help from beyond doesn't stop with the gods, however. Where great heroes fight, spirits from past battles join the cause of the worthy. Called Eidolons, sometimes they inhabit and bolster the abilities of the living (Eidolon of Countless Battles as an Aura, Spirit Mantle), and other times they join the battle with their own physical presence (Nyxborn Shieldmate, Eidolon of Countless Battles as a creature).

A little Bestow gives me creatures early and mid game, and auras (that target on cast) mid and late game. Bestow has too high of a cmc to be a heavy theme in this deck, but in the slower, mana-heavy pace of an EDH game a splash of it gives me some options.

I'm stoked with the performance here. It's budget, and it hits hard and fast. Using tons of instants and deciding which relatively small creature to boost that turn and seeing the effects flow out of it, then swinging big is a really fun way to play. This burns through cards fast, so we'll maybe see about finding ways to get more recovery going, but this deck is about speed (it's the fastest aggro EDH I've built). It's not going to be as quick as highly competitive EDH decks, but in testing so far I usually I am posing threats by turns 4 and 5 (not bad for a casual, budget deck).
