Hi no Tori and the cycle of life

Commander / EDH BR (Rakdos) Phoenix Sacrifice

TRANScend

Maybeboard

  • This is a shared deck I built alongside my boyfriend. It still needs playtest, so there may be changes soon.
  • We want this deck to be somewhat dependant on the damage dealt by our commander's first ability as it attempts to win. No combos, no locks, no shenenigans. A lot of value is required here as our Phoenixes often cost quite a bit of mana, a good level of interaction with the table in the form of answers is also needed (without limitating our friends' experience with their own games), and plenty Phoenix recursion.

  • By talking to friends well-versed in the rules, it appears as though as Syrix, Carrier of the Flame plus Skyfire Phoenix leads to a pretty busted interaction when facing boardwipes, or if you have a sac outlet.

  • Infuriating our commander as it dishes out a bit of combat damage, essentially doubling it at end of turn as it sees another fellow fire bird being released from the grasp of ashes and rises anew, it really is what this deck is meant to do, as we look for cards to achieve it as lightly and effectively as we can. Hi no Tori was never depicted as an agressive punisher, but surely as a being that truly values the rises and falls of life, much like Syrix's abilities. I personally really enjoy this deck idea and I hope it brings joy to other people who might stumble upon this decklist someday.

  • Yeah we know that Managorger Phoenix isn't meant to be used outside Magic Arena but its a pretty good card and I'm sure most playgroups wouldn't mind seeing an IRL proxy of it
