Maybeboard

[High]: This deck is designed for high-power games as defined by PlayEDH--some of the most expensive and powerful cards are omitted, but the deck is close to CEDH standards.

This deck follows the CEDH meta pretty closely--or did the last time I updated it--but diverges in a few ways that prevent it from being properly CEDH. The main reason it does this is that I used to put a lot of stock in avoiding proxies and winning store tournaments, and I imagined there was a thriving environment for playing decks at this level. There isn't, at least in my area, so the deck is in semi-retirement at the moment, but I still keep it sleeved for the once-in-a-blue-moon occasion my friends decide to play at this power level.

The overall play pattern is almost identical to the ad naus / doomsday Yuriko decks in CEDH at the time I built it, although I did eventually drop Ad Nauseam because I find it even riskier than Doomsday. The most significant difference is that it's a bit less consistent. It can win on turn one (by holding Thassa's Oracle, either Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact, at least one land that can make colored mana, and enough zero-cost mana rocks to make up the difference), but it's more likely to have to build into a combo and aim to win the resulting counterspell war. Bleed is also an option, and there are a few choices geared toward that possibility, but it's definitely Plan B, and I think the newer tempo decks have inclusions that make them better at it that I may be forced to copy the next time I get around to revising the deck, assuming I do.

Generally, if a card that's well-established as a competitive choice for Yuriko is missing from the list, it's to save money. Underground Sea and Mox Diamond would add a lot to the deck's mana base, for example, but if you're actually buying cards, I don't think they're worth $700 each to the deck. I've also skimped a bit on the tutor suite--Imperial Seal would be great, but Diabolic Intent is a good enough replacement because getting Yuriko back into the command zone is often desirable. I've used a couple of the open slots on favorites from lower-powered decks that just don't see play in CEDH, such as Scroll Rack, which can still be devastating in games that last long enough to win through bleed. I also run Temporal Mastery instead of Temporal Trespass because topdeck manipulation makes it easy to set up the miracle ability.

Gush is for Doomsday piles. The following info on Doomsday is copied from the primer here because they no longer run Doomsday and might eventually delete that section of the primer, which is a handy reference as long as this deck continues to run it:

Updated Doomsday Basics: Single trigger gush pile, requires BBBU: Gush, Gitaxian Probe, Lotus Petal, Thassa's Oracle, Agadeem's Awakening

Single trigger gushless pile, requires BBBU: Gitaxian Probe, Brainstorm, Thassa's Oracle, Mox Amber, Lotus Petal

Single Triger gushless pile that doesn't lose to a kill spell on oracle, requires BBBBU: Gitaxian Probe, Village Rites, Thassa's Oracle, Lotus Petal, Agadeem's Awakening

Doomsday Tricks:

  • The gushless pile loses to removal on oracle if you don't have extra devotion because brainstorm puts two cards back on top of the deck.
  • If you have extra mana, replace the mana sources in the piles with free counterspells.
  • Cavern of souls is a tech option if you think your opponents are sandbagging red blast or creature counterspells, replace Lotus petal with it in the piles (but don't cut lotus petal for cavern).
  • If you have more ninjas, you can cut draw spells for counterspells.
  • Though Agadeem's Awakening is included in the piles, you can remove that and include Street Wraith at the top of the pile to make them immune to multiple removal spells
