isnt there a card that you can banish from hand to generate red mana? could be a good addition to get grapeshot going

There is: Simian Spirit Guide but it doesn't synergize; it doesn't draw me cards, it doesn't fetch cards, it doesn't add enough mana to run more expensive cards without risk of breaking my combo. I see where you're going with it, but it doesn't fit with the deck.

During playtesting I hit artifacts multiple times that killed the draw combo, without hitting grapeshot. I recommend a third, maybe a fourth if that is your win-con. You may also want Mystical Tutor or something like it for it. It's a great combo you got going, but You need more consistency, because this deck, in true Izzet fashion, can either be finely crafted laser cannon of death, or an exploding pile of junk, depending on your luck.

That's the big problem I've been having with it. It's like a 50/50 shot of win or humiliating defeat. I like the idea of the tutor; I'll probably swap out Serum Visions . Any other suggestions? I'm not the most familiar with legacy, I'll admit!

If you know of any more "free" cantrips, that would also be much appreciated. Something that works like Chromatic Sphere , preferably, but free.

your most important spell in the entire deck is Glimpse of Nature . I actually pulled off a turn 1 win because of this, leading into Lotus Petal , drawdrawdrawdradraw and before i know it i cast 22 spells, slapped down a City of Brass , then another lotus petal for the grapeshot.

oh, and btw, if you play against a blue opponent, they will absolutely know to Force of Will or Mana Leak your glimpse of nature after the first game. Honestly though you may need a lot of work for this deck to see more than a 50% win ratio. I can just imagine what happens when you get a Hymn to Tourach or... anything that stops your combo really.

There isn't any real alternate for most of the spells, though. Nothing cantrips the way that it needs to in a deck like this. If someone FoWs me then that's just a loss, plain and simple. There is no 'Plan B.' A turn-1 win deck (which is specifically what it's designed for) doesn't have room for a Plan B. Especially not a Storm deck.

I may just put Serum Powder in here for the free mulligans and deck-thinning.

If you have any more overhaul ideas, please, please do not withhold them.

I was going to suggest Serum Powder . Another option could be Burning Wish and turn your sideboard into a wish board. Bringing in Silence or Red Elemental Blast from the board in games 2/3 is good against Force of Will . Also, I think Fastbond is banned in legacy. Lion's Eye Diamond might be better than Phyrexian Altar , using the LED is a little tricky, you'd have to crack it in response to casting a draw spell or cycling a street wraith so that you don't kill your combo.

@cerberus8317 Well the problem I have isn't mana-fixing. It's card-draw. If I can get it going (being defined as having more than two creatures in hand after I Glimpse), I don't need mana. That will come. Just getting an Altar into play will ensure I don't run out of mana sources before I can Storm. I just need reliable ways that I can draw more than one card with only one Glimpse (or none, if I combo-break and have to pass turn).

How the heck do you plan on casting Phyrexian Altar ? I have a tough time in playstesting on this deck getting the 2 mana for a Grapeshot , let alone casting the altar.

By drawing into my Lotus Petal s, City of Brass es, and Moxen. I've never had a problem generating mana from a good hand. It'll work perfectly 50% of the time. About 15% of the time it's very clunky, but workable on T2 if I have to go that far. The rest of the time you sit with a hand full of 0-drops and no reason to cast them but to block something.

Interesting deck. Gitaxian Probe really shines here and keeps the flow coming.

The problem here is the same as some of your other decks - just a single way to win, Grapeshot .

But there are only 3 cards that completely end a successful Grapeshot that you should be particularly concerned about - Mindbreak Trap , Counterflux (not likely in Legacy), and Leyline of Sanctity . In the event of the first two, casting both will keep your win. In the case of LoS, there should be enchantment-hate in the side for that. I don't have any, presently, however.

Runed Halo and Nevermore shuts it down. Also Story Circle prevents some part of the damage for white mana.

Ghort - I see where you're going with that, but it's too mana-intensive, and would only work with the Kobolds, which are less than half the creature base. Interesting suggestion, though!

+1 for the name alone.

May i recommend some amount of Elvish Spirit Guide? more free mana sounds good

November 29, 2014 6:05 p.m.

thuzra says... #25

Well I don't get much hate because I'm too poor to own it as of yet eheh, but no doubt I would be hamstrung and turned into a throwrug if I brought this into my shop! Also, I've done what testing I can (many many games), and the mana isn't usually a problem. Not after I get going. It's keeping live draws; things I can cantrip with, things that matter. The Spirit Guides may produce free mana, but in a deck like this, the loss of a card is NOT free. Other versions of Cheerios might run them, but this one doesn't want the dead draw. I'll never cast it, and if I'm on the verge of fizzling, it's the last card I want to draw.
