FNM 3-3 out of 18 people —April 14, 2017
Not bad but not amazing. It's good considering it was my first tournament using this deck, and it was a blind metagame.
Match 1: Vs Abzan Midrange
For whatever reason, he just could not draw Lingering Souls. I just Liliana of the Veiled him to death both games. Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver was also great here.
Won 2-0
Match 2: Vs Bant Eldrazi
One of my worst matchups. Game one he couldn't find the right mana and I forced him to have to guess his draws with Liliana of the Veil's discard, and ended up winning. Game two nothing interesting happened. I lost because I'm bad against this deck and its Thought-Knot Seers. Game three I put up a really good fight. I even played Simic Charm and saved my three Tarmogoyfs from being tapped down by Drowner of Hope. But there's only so much I can do when my opponent draws both Rest in Peace and Relic of Progenitus.
Lost 1-2
Match 3 Vs UW Spirits
Cavern of Souls is my least favorite card now. I couldn't counter his spirits, and he got to freely overrun me. I drew too many counters and not enough removal game one, and game two I just got mana flooded really badly.
Lost 0-2
Match 4 Vs Ad Nauseam
Game 1 he had to play Spoils of the Vault to find an Ad Nauseam and exiled too many relevant cards to be able to win. Game 2 I slammed down two Delver of Secrets Flip and one Tarmogoyf and forced him to have to go ahead and go for the combo, and I had Mana Leak.
Won 2-0
Match 5 Vs Eggs
Game 1 I played an early Tasigur, the Golden Fang and played two Stubborn Denials while having a fast clock. It almost wasn't fast enough of a clock, But it was. Game 2 I played a total of three hand disruption cards, one of which was a Snapcaster Mage flashback Thoughtseize. He couldn't come back from that.
Won 2-0
Cuts to Top 8
I got matched up against the exact same Eggs guy I had just played. This time, Game 1 I made the mistake of playing Liliana of the Veil when I should have held up mana for my Mana Leak. I underestimated how quickly he could get the combo. Game 2 I goofed hardcore because I went to Thoughtseize him, he had four mana untapped, he tapped two, sacrificed Terrarion for a two blue mana, countered my Thoughtseize with Swan Song using one of those mana. I just saw that he had only two lands untapped and went to Mana Leak his Swan Song. He paid the 3 using the two lands and the one mana he had left over from Terrarion. I really just didn't feel like playing against Eggs again, honestly.
Lost 0-2
Could've been better, but could've been worse. I'd say I'm pretty proud of my overall performance. Most of what went wrong was my fault and not the deck's.

This list looks fun. The only thing I can think of is to either add another Snapcaster Mage or remove it entirely.
+1.

You said "+1" but didn't actually +1...
What should I do about the dreadful Bant Eldrazi matchup? It feels unwinnable. Should I just take the losses and prepare for everything else?

I just realized it's because you had already upvoted it before. My bad.

No worries. People always give advice and do not even give the +1 until they accept their advice--that is not me.
Eldrazi is rough, but add 1x more of Maelstrom Pulse, add Slaughter Pact, and or Murderous Cut. Doom Blade and Go for the Throat are suckers, but work just like a Terminate against the bigger Eldrazi. Board wipes work exceptionally well (Damnation). Perhaps adding more Gurmag Angler could help > it trades with Reality Smasher and kills Thought-Knot Seer. I just recently started using Obstinate Baloth, for Smasher's effects.
Unfortunately, for us, Eldrazi & Tron are some of our harder match ups, but we slaughter infect (Tron's worst match up). Some things also just matter on the cards you pull.

Let me review this and give you an update on the list also is Delver of Secrets supposed to be in the deck if it is MIDRANGE...?

I can't really see why not. Delver just increases my clock speed. The slot has to go to a creature.

Sultai Delver and Sultai Midrange
Both these decks are yours to use and take ideas from my only request is that you mention me if you do take any ideas. Criticism is welcomed as long as it is explanatory and there is a purpose I am here to help but also to learn.

Your fine I just dont think you see the big picture that Trons spells are normally countered by squall which means you want as much one mana interaction you were right about surgical something I overlooked in my rush to help you. Snapcaster Mage is one of the hallmarks of blue modern decks. Most of the time it won't even effect Tarmogoyf. Tasigur, can be a problem with goyf but havent had any troubles because of my opponents graveyard. I also dont see whybyou have stubborn denial as you cant guaruntee it will counter whatever spell. Would rather have more snapcaster or more threats like gurmag. Go for the Throat would be tight as well and is better than doom blade as there are relevant black creatures in the modern format

1- On the play, Stubborn Denial counters T1 Expedition Map. I don't know what your experience is vs Tron, but keeping them off Tron is going to be a much better game plan than trying to just wait for their threats and countering them. They will almost always have more "Fatties that win them the game if they resolve" than you will have counters.
2- You can't justify Snapcaster Mage just by saying it's good in Modern. I agree that it's good in Modern. But I don't feel like I need it in this deck because my curve is already higher than I'd like it to be because of the Lillianas.
I do agree that I probably need more threats, though. And I appreciate that you can also see the power of Simic Charm.

If your so worried about Tron then you can play Spell Pierce in the sideboard but honestly playing various Delver strategies on and off again for about two years if you can play Turn 1 Delver and apply pressure and hold up mana leak you are in a better position. Playing Delver against Tron and various versions of Tron I found that GB Tron was the hardest matchup as they had the early interaction with collective brutality and fatal push, otherwise playing countersquall and mana leak was good enough. In the list I sent you I went to an old school classic being fulminator mage for midrange. But ifyou play Delver I can't stress the importance of ceremonious rejection, not only countering affinity but tron eldrazi and eldrazi Tron. The one mana was so relevant as I was able to hold up Ceremonious Rejection and then play something like a Tasigur, when stuck on two lands. Which is something very important because you might end the game with only two lands in play but that's ok which is why I feel that ceremonious is better than disdainful stroke and why I am not a fan of. As for Stubborn denial I would rather play spell pierce if you dont want to have more answers and more counters instead.

As my thing with snapcaster mage just having access and more potential to more counterspells makes it so much better think about it having access to seven-nine counterspells is a lot better than just 5. Snapcaster can also smooth out your draws and get you out of tight situations he also acts as a threat he is slow but he gets there.

Thanks for commenting so many times and creating the illusion that people are actually talking about this deck lol.
My reasoning for playing Stubborn Denial is this: Force Spikeing things people play turn 1-2 is still usually going to counter them. Plus a good 70% of the time I'm needing the card as a "Counter your removal spell targeting Tasigur" or something like that. If anything, I want to add in more creatures to trigger Ferocious. And I've seen RUG lists playing Denial with only eight creatures that trigger ferocious.
I understand that Ceremonious Rejection costs one mana, and I understand how big a deal that is. But like I said, it doesn't counter the shenanigans of TitanShift, plus you need to realize Disdainful Stroke helps shore up the fact that I usually can't do anything about big permanents. "Spells that cost more than four" represents a lot more things that will kill me than "Spells that are colorless". That's how I look at it.Without Disdainful Stroke I'll lose to a fringe jank not-viable-in-Modern Dragon tribal deck I get matched up with for game one, or something like that. I'd honestly rather lose to Affinity than lose to Dragon Tribal.
I'm starting to warm up to the idea of putting Snapcaster Mage back in. I am 100% sure this deck needs more creatures. I'm not playing more than two though.

You get my plus one today. But countersquall is I think better than stroke mainly for the 2 damage which has been relevant

Updated. I have wanted to play Countersquall because of my lack of Lightning Bolt giving me an overdependence on creature damage. But if I were to play it, I'd rather it be in the mainboard. I have not found room for it quite yet.

Instead of Mana Leak you would play Countersquall. Typically

Nice build. I run Sultai as well, how's main board simic charm working out for you? Anything it is especially useful against? What matches, if any, do you side it out? +1 BTW. For real +1, not just in spirit ;)

Hi, thanks for commenting!
Simic Charm has impressed me lately. First let me list off the most relevant applications of each mode:
Giant Growth mode
-Not having Lightning Bolt makes me unhappy sometimes. This is the closest I could get to being able to do the extra three damage this deck misses out on.
-Bant Eldrazi player swings their Reality Smasher into your untapped Snapcaster Mage (Or any other time you need to kill a big creature)
-Make your Tarmogoyf better than your opponent's Tarmogoyf
-Can help trigger ferocious on Stubborn Denial if you're that desperate
"Permanents you control gain Hexproof until end of turn" mode
-Counters any targeted removal, even if it's an activated or triggered ability. This is important in a creature-lite deck.
-The fact that it makes ALL of your permanents hexproof is relevant against Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Elder Deep-Fiend. Follow that up with Liliana of the Veil's -2 ability and you can do what nearly no other deck can do: Win after a resolved Ulamog.
-It even counters Tectonic Edge
Unsummon mode
-Pseudo removal when you can't find your actual removal
-Save a creature from a board wipe
-Bounce Snapcaster Mage
-Adds value to late game Thoughtseize (May be too cute of a combo, though)
Now with matchups, it really helps against Eldrazi because they have a lot of activated and triggered abilities that target. Plus the whole +3/+3 block thing. It's a good thing to have in your hand against any control deck, since it is essentially "Your opponents can't mess with your stuff this turn". It serves as tempo-bounce against aggro. Its worst showing is against non-interactive combo or burn, but even then, you can still use it for three extra damage or another Snapcaster Mage. Siding it out is usually a judgement call. I tend to side it out whenever I'm siding in Collective Brutality.

Also, I looked at your version, and your build is a lot closer to control than mine. This deck is trying to be closer to BGx. And I'm also playing Delver of Secrets Flip strategies, which means I'm trying to play with a faster clock.
Keep these differences in mind if you're trying to compare our decks.

I'm gonna tag a friend of mine who plays Sultai Midrange competitively. Cheers!
