Horde of Notions Charm Tribal

Commander / EDH

StormlightSoldier

So this is my take on Charm Tribal. First thing to note is that it is not 100% competitive. This is partly because I'm (A) poor and (B) obsessed with card art. It has to be beautiful. Despite these limitations, this deck is surprisingly strong and versatile.

I initially built it with nothing but charms. It wasn't very good. So I stuck in an elemental sub-theme to make use of the fact that Horde of Notions is ridiculous, threw in some split cards, commands and ultimatums and here we are. Basically, I like modal spells.

The two cards that I'm looking to fit into the deck are Bring to Light and Warping Wail , along with a single Wastes to make that easier (EDIT: Bring to Light is now in, and the best card in the deck. It can fetch the cheap half of a split card and cast the expensive half. Who knew?). I may also swap Cruel Ultimatum in for Brilliant Ultimatum , because all too often I'm hitting lands with that one.

Five colour allowed me to put in a few cards that I really like but couldn't use in any other deck, like Etched Monstrosity , Chromanticore, Door to Nothingness and Obelisk of Alara. All four are amazing, as it turns out, although rarely does Door to Nothingness survive long enough to work.

The elementals work mostly with an ETB theme for graveyard recursion and Mimic Vat tokening / Venser flickering, with some that are just awesome in their own right (Magmatic Force, Fusion Elemental and Torrent Elemental , for example).

In terms of Charms, I've made the controversial decision to exclude the admittedly very strong dragon charms (eg. Rith's Charm ) because I don't like the art so much for them. Narset is amazing for rebounding modal spells or big nasty spells like Violent Ultimatum .

The land fetching / mana fixing package is again fairly modest, but effective. Between Manalith, Spectral Searchlight and Chromatic Lantern.... I've just realised there isn't a Commander's Sphere in here. I wonder why that is. Anyway, between them, Channel the Suns and Prismatic Omen I reliably have all the colours that I need, and with Explore, Urban Evolution , Harrow and Into the Wilds the number and type of lands available to me is almost always enough.

I find that a simple mix of tri-lands and basics is enough to always have all five colours by at least turn 5 if not before, although there is obviously room for improvement there should you wish.

I think the two remaining cards to talk about are Prism Array and Unexpected Results. Obviously Unexpected Results is hilarious, and unexpectedly casting anything, land included, is fun. Charms are great to hit with it, because usually at least one of the available modes is relevant. Prism Array was the rare in BFZ that everyone got angry about. It's really good. With five counters on it you can stall someone for up to five turns, which is wonderful. Admittedly I have never sunk the mana into it for scrying, but it's usually been destroyed by a frustrated Voltron player by then.

As I say, I've got two or so cards that I want to put in, but otherwise this list is a hell of a lot of fun, and surprisingly powerful. Also it isn't hideously expensive, as five colour decks often are. If you happen to try it out, let me know what you think!
