After 15 years of dominance, Tarmogoyf is at its all time lowest price since it was first printed back in Future Sight.
Currently sitting at $13.25/ea, I wonder

. . . . .

CAN WE FINALLY BUILD JUND ON A BUDGET??

If you don't already know how Jund works, check out my primer for all the finer points of Modern Jund.

Define "Budget"

Modern Burn has always been the cheapest deck in the format. With a current price tag of ~$515 on MTGGoldfish, we will use this as our budget. I mean, why play boring old Burn when you could be playing Jund for the same price?

The 3 Core Values of Modern Jund

  • Efficient Hand Disruption
  • The Best Removal in the Format
  • The Best Top Deck of any deck

How to build Modern Jund for $515

Boseiju, Who Endures

The word budget and $25 land don't really follow the same thought process. However, a critical game piece, Boseiju helps get rid of Urza's Saga, Fable of the Mirror-Breaker  , Colossus Hammer, and a bunch of other problem non-creature permanents in the format. For now it is justified as a flexible mana source/un-counterable removal spell.

Ghost Quarter

An effective way to remove enabling lands like Urza's Saga, Cabal Coffers, Urza's Tower or even an opposing creature land. In a pinch it can also be used for your own mana fixing, although this isn't ideal and should be a fringe case at best.

Sheltered Thicket

are not essential T1 so, running a $10 shock-land doesn't make much sense to me in a budget build. The added ability to cycle this away for a late game answer is worth more than the seldom needed mana from this. It does make the deck slightly more clunky in the early game, but as a 1-of I'm treating it as fetchable Raging Ravine for now.

Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance

A utility land that more often than not is a mountain, but in more grindy match-ups the ability to make chump blockers is very useful.

Sulfurous Springs

Even though the price of Blackcleave Cliffs has come down dramatically over the years, Sulfurous Springs gets the job done at 10% of the price. The damage loss over time can become problematic. Unfortunately, the alternatives are slim. Do you really want Foreboding Ruins or Smoldering Marsh holding you back from T1 discard?

Takenuma, Abandoned Mire

Recursion that can't be countered, although its target could potentially be exiled in response. This doesn't really need to be in the deck per say, and I could see swapping it for Hive of the Eye Tyrant potentially. But, I like having the option to be grindy late game and reduce problems with flooding out. Recurring a threat is always a welcome flexibility and at $5 I can't pass it up.

Dark Confidant

WHY are you playing Dark Confidant in 2022???
Dark Confidant is currently $20 whereas Wrenn and Six is ~$60/70. Running a single copy of W6 is not going to have a consistent impact in a 60 card deck and honestly, Bob is just a great card advantage engine. We are running 3 copies as the card advantage is needed with so many creature decks in the format. We need all the removal we can get off the top of the deck.

Dragon's Rage Channeler

An aggressive threat that demands an answer. If left unanswered, DRC can run away with the game as our version of Delver of Secrets  . If we can curve into this Turn 1, it can either grow Tarmogoyf by filling the yard, or eat a removal spell allowing you to stick a Turn 2 Goyf or Bob.

Seasoned Pyromancer

Depending on how you want to build your deck, I could see running a second copy over Bob. Spyro provides much needed gas late game and can give you the chump blockers needed to survive long enough to stabilize. I'm running 1 copy here as the manabase just isn't robust enough to reliably provide by T3.

Despise

With cards like Omnath, Locus of Creation, Fury/Solitude/Grief, and Murktide Regent heavily represented in the current meta, Despise is the perfect budget replacement for Thoughtseize.

Liliana of the Veil

With a reprint in [DMU], LotV is currently under $40. LotV pairs nicely with Bob to deprive the opponent of resources while you stay ahead on card advantage. She also draws a lot of attention for attackers to give you more time to build a manabase that can support multiple spells per turn.

Maelstrom Pulse

A nice catch-all removal spell that can take care of any non-land permanent or multiple tokens. One thing to remember with Pulse is if the chosen target is sacrificed or otherwise destroyed in response, Pulse will essentially be countered. Make sure the opponent is tapped out before you try to clean up a problem board with it. It can be great against Crashing Footfalls, pretty terrible against Treasure Tokens.

Jund Charm

A versatile card with multiple relevant modes. - Exile the Delve player's GY. - Kill Dauthi Voidwalker, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer and Grief all in one shot. - Save a blocker from dying or pump an attacker for lethal.

Sudden Edict

A great answer to Murktide Regent, Archon of Cruelty, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and so much more. Unless the opponent has hexproof, Tamiyo, Collector of Tales, or Sigarda, Host of Herons this can't be countered or responded to. Just make sure the creature you want dead is the only creature they have in play first.

That's all I've got!
