He has removed Felidar Sovereign from the deck, so gaining life is no longer the wincon. Not only that but gaining a couple of life, while setting yourself back a turn is so no worth considering the stage his deck was earlier he would be able to gain that 1 or 2 life loss back very quickly.
That being said lifegain tap lands are only halfway decent in control decks trying to "pad" your life and survive an attack or two. Fetchlands are just far superior when it comes to improving the mana base of a multi colored deck.
