Welcome friends, I felt it necessary to take the time to say good bye to an old friend, while building out a deck I play in casual called Mark it Zero. While Kytheon doesn't make a personal appearance in this deck, it's through this collection of 100 cards he is remembered by a few mentions and mechanics.
Damage Prevention is sort of a well thought of mechanic, but largely ignored, due to spell effects like
Skullcrack
. Most people say it only has its moments. I believe with a Commander like Avacyn, that moment is now, forever, and always, Amen.
Hopefully Ill be able to show you how to deal with a few factors that can hang this deck up. I'll be going down a list on how to slug it out strategically to the bitter end, hopefully your opponents end.
Creatures
-
Serra Ascendant
is the proverbial One-Punch Man of mono white. If he's in your opening hand you can count on getting ahead, or dragging out any early spot removal your opponents might have. Be careful with him though. In multiplayer pods he can give you all the threat you need to seem like a Big Target if not dealt with.
-
Serra the Benevolent
is here to sooth your qualms and soak up any damage late game with her Emblem. Remember when I said damage prevention wasn't a crazily sought after mechanic? It's because of this I was able to slip a few more expensive cards to bolster this deck. Kind of a win/win if you ask me.
-
Avacyn, Guardian Angel
of course is the star of the show. This card art is probably my favorite of the cards she is printed on. As a 5/4 Flying Vigilance she is a fairly strong attacker and can provide some swift groin kicks when you are giving out hugs.
-
Djeru, With Eyes Open
is here to help find Serra, I figure putting a card in here to bolster one of the better card's use isn't a bad idea.
-
Cho-Manno, Revolutionary
was my original inspiration for this deck so he holds a place as a bigger battlefield chump.
-
Emeria Shepherd
can give you the utility of a more expensive land
Emeria, The Sky Ruin
at a fraction of the card cost. All while giving you a 4/4 Flyer to pummel your opponents with, she brings back anything you lost early on.
-
Linvala, the Preserver
is here for a wee-bit-o-correction. She can provide aerial damage, life-gain, tokens, any of which can bring you back up a little from the damage and removal you might have suffered early on.
-
Serra Avatar
is just a battlefield brick. Whenever she drops every opponent is just looking for ways to avoid it. I tend to use her for a more self preservation method that I will explain with another card.
-
Aegis Angel
can help protect anything of value, I tend to be reserved with her aggro, as she is more of a guardian figure for other more reliant cards. She is just another step to getting through the fog of war you will be spinning.
-
Guardian of the Gateless
is a good damage router that can slow down huge advances if combined with Avacyn's abilities. She also swells big enough to combat any big threats that might be mingled in the assault.
-
Mother of Runes
can solve a lot of issues. Making herself an obvious threat in this deck. She will give protections to any of your creatures who need to soak damage.
-
Palisade Giant
is a card when combined with the few above that will secure your life totals even more. Shes beefy and can route damage even when tapped, or when damage prevention is null due to effects.
-
Kor Cartographer
is another correction card to give yourself some lands. He's a welcome addition when Avacyn's ultimate can be hard to activate.
-
Bishop of Wings
welcomes home any angels and provides you with some minor retribution for loosing them.
-
Intrepid Hero
stands over the gates. Ever watchful for big threats that need dealt with.
-
Kami of False Hope
can be a simple chump blocker, or an all together damage shutdown later on.
-
Seraph of the Sword
is an aerial combatant that can route anything to powerful for your other angels to handle. She simply gives them a big ol' hug, and sends them on their merry way.
-
Everdawn Champion
is much like her sister in the skies. Another creature for soaking bigger threats than your smaller defenders can handle.
-
Serene Master
is here to guard the pearly gates, being a super tricky card to evade for normal attackers. He will stall out early threats and cushion your game play. First Strike , Double Strike, Deathtouch, doesn't matter. This guy can handle it all.
The Pearly Gates
-
Order of the Stars
is the true routing champion of this deck. Equipping him with an enchantment to keep him working can hold off a lot of early threat.
-
Dragon's Eye Sentry
isn't a bad little cornerstone in the wall. Swat down chumps with him if need be.
-
Cathedral Membrane
punishes any would be attackers with a savage trigger when killed. Just more ball crushing weight to fend off any aggro players.
-
Angelic Wall
is one to watch the skies, preventing anything from getting in over your head way early.
-
Novice Knight
is a beefier defender with a heavier front end for putting down nuisance creatures.
-
Perimeter Captain
bolsters your other defenders at the gates by triggering life-gain. This combined with some artifacts this deck hold can keep you up to speed with opponents.
-
Pride Guardian
can be another stall card for preventing anything bigger than him from attacking.
-
Resolute Watchdog
because what guy doesn't like a good ol' pup in his deck. This one even protects a creature if need be. What a good boy.
-
Steel Wall
well, because the Pearly Gates won't be made out of cheese, now will they.
-
Wall of Omens
is a favorite card for many people, he replaces his card position in your hand and is big enough on the end to hold back most early creatures.
-
Wall of Reverence
is another card that will combo heavily with the artifacts I mentioned before. Combined with Serra's Avatar, you can quickly turn the game around, or into a seemingly hopeless en-devour for your opponents.
The Holy Grails
-
Well of Lost Dreams
is the Artifact I mentioned earlier that combos well with your life-gaining walls. This card is here as a way to speed back up your draw, and flood the field with more fog.
-
Mask of Avacyn
/
Swiftfoot Boots
will protect your valuables, and they usually can be readied before your Commander makes an appearance.
-
Tamiyo's Journal
can help give you that one piece of synergy you're missing or had removed later on with another.
-
Sol Ring
The proverbial One Ring of magic needs no introduction.
-
Hedron Archive
is a nice little rock with some draw ability for later on.
Prevention Tactics
-
Angelic Renewal
saves anything useful from getting taken away too early. Or defends your Commander until better options are available.
-
Gideon's Intervention
is a Commander shut-down card. Use it to define and nullify your specific threats.
-
Gift of Immortality
is one of those cards that can help route damage prevention by putting it on the right creatures like your Palisade Giant.
-
Holy Mantle
does something similar but only counts for creatures. Doesn't matter though, they usually are swinging at you with something.
-
Personal Sanctuary
shuts down upkeep damage triggers and any triggers that may occur during your turn.
-
Pariah
is a staple in this deck, long played on cards with these similar abilities. It is something you should look for to get the game locked down for total defense.
-
Seal of Cleansing
/
Oblivion Ring
/
Prison Realm
/
Condemn
/
Celestial Flare
/
Reciprocate
are all here to help remove anything your strategies are having problems with.
-
Miraculous Recovery
/
Defy Death
will bring back anything you absolutely need in a pinch.
-
Mystifying Maze
is a budgeted option for Maze of Ith. There is another land card coming in the new Theros Beyond Death block very similar as well, and will most likely find its way into this deck.
Group Hugs
Besides Avacyn's abilities to politic damage on the board, some other things that might provide favor with your opponents are
Geier Reach Sanitarium
and
Otherworld Atlas
. Any other disadvantaged players may appreciate these and creating team-work elements are always a plus when facing down a stronger common foe.
Can-O-Fog
Lots of instants in this deck can shore up the defenses when needed. If your new to combat tricks, after playing a deck like this consistently you learn the proper times and situations to use these spells. However, don't let that hinder you from just throwing them out. Only one way to learn am I right? These cards include.
Acolyte's Reward
/
Awe Strike
/
Brave the Elements
/
Dazzling Reflection
/
Holy Day
The prize of these spells is
Dawn Charm
. Not once have I ever held a Dawn Charm, that didn't get cast at some point for good reason. This card has a lot of utility in this deck, and should be used when other all other options above are off the table. Seriously, Use it wisely.
Summary
Well there you have it folk's. I find I enjoy this deck a lot due to the fact it make's people either love, or hate it. It's just fun to play and most people will feel the same way I do. Thanks for stopping by.
