Entertaining concept. You may wish to take advantage of cards that allow you to return creatures to player's hands. If you return a token, it disappears, and if you need to save one of your creatures, you will be able to reuse them for their effects.

I looked around for possible bounce cards however I could not find any that seemed streamlined enough to be useful. Also, I added a sideboard as of March 9th.

Given all the ETB effects I would recommend some blink cards like Cloudshift over bounce effects. Better yet, Essence Flux will let you additionally pump the spirit.

Although I lover the idea and think that it would allows some crazy damage sometimes, it would lower the consistency of the deck and that is something that a midrange combo deck cannot afford.

I love this deck. I want this deck. This deck dies to Blood Moon like few other modern decks I've seen. Red is the one colour this deck doesn't want, and that is literally all you would have access to if you couldn't tap your mana before it resolved, and use it to cast a Maelstrom Pulse right away. Any reason you're not running any basics at all? Surely having two islands, one plains, three swamps, and two forests wouldn't cause that much trouble to the mana base, would it? Besides, it would hurt less.

Those specific numbers are referring to the coloured mana costs of Massacre Wurm, Hunted Phantasm, Path to Exile, and Hunted Troll.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I added some basics and I will add more if I find that I need them. Currently, I am trying to preserve my consistent mana base.

You know, given that you can get multiples of Illness in the Ranks on the field, why not run Hunted Horror?

March 11, 2017 2:15 a.m.

The main reason is that it only gives your opponent two tokens and those tokens are harder to remove. It is also a tax on the mana base

My thoughts on the basic lands were said because of remembering a GP modern where a Grixis deck was packing three islands exactly for the express purpose of being able to play Cryptic Command against a deck that had landed Blood Moon. I realize that trying to do that for all the different mana requirements in this deck might well be impossible while keeping mana consistent; also, you do have means of getting rid of one in your sideboard via Ratchet Bomb, and Swan Song to prevent it hitting. Mostly, it's just a consideration that might warrant a bit of mana base testing? After all, if you can simplify a mana base without making it less reliable, my assumption is that is a good thing. However, if, as is possible, it would disrupt the mana base completely, then it is better to take the risk than make your deck run sub-optimally.

I am testing the deck and seeing how many basics I can afford to use.

Massacre Wurm is not a modern playable card. I know it's cool for sweeping away their tokens, but a 6 mana triple black card is neither good for your mana base nor good enough in modern.

I agree, do you have any ideas for replacements?

Mutilate to nuke the whole board? Or would you have enough swamps regularly enough?

March 11, 2017 8:10 p.m.

I replaced all but one wurm and I don't like that Mutilate nukes my stuff as well. Thanks for the help.

Ratchet Bomb might be OK, as it can kill all the tokens, but I do feel Engineered Explosives already in the sideboard is just better here. Might be better sometimes?

March 11, 2017 11:29 p.m.

Ratchet Bomb used to be on the sideboard instead of Engineered Explosives but the explosives will almost always be better.

You could potentially cut the Path to Exiles and Suture Priests for Fatal Pushes / Dismembers and some card advantage, maybe Serum Visions. This would allow you to free up your mana base a bit more as you don't have to run white in the deck.

March 12, 2017 7:20 a.m.

@enpc Good idea, i'm saving the current deck separately and testing removing white. I considered that for a while but I was and still am unsure of what to replace Stony Silence with on the sideboard. Any ideas?

You could still run a single white shock and alongside Forbidden Orchard it may still be playable.

Other than that, I'm not entirely sure sorry. I haven't had much experience sideboarding against affinity.

March 12, 2017 7:35 a.m.

There, my mana base should be more reliable although i'm not sure how the deck will function now.

Hrmmm... interesting deck. I would have advised Torpor Orb so you get to essentially get a huge dude without them getting their tokens but that works too. Not really sure what could make the deck work better, other than I guess a little ramp.

I've seen a similar list that ran Echoing Truth to great effect. It's been quite awhile since I played against it though, so I'm not sure where he fit it in.

I playtested this and it's honestly a lot of fun, you've done a great job here!

Main deck looks really solid, can't really find much wrong with it.

If there's any suggestion I could make, it would probably be Beck.

The Beck part of it is pretty cheap to cast, you can take advantage of Hunted Phantasm and Hunted Troll and draw yourself a bunch of cards.

The Call part is probably less relevant because it's a bit expensive but hey, if you got the mana why not?

I'm not sure what you would take out though, like I said the main deck looks solid.

Some other cards I came across were Curse of the Swine and Swan Song but I suppose those aren't very good because they make 2/2 tokens instead of 1/1.

Good luck with this deck though, it's pretty awesome

You could also consider running Mercy Killing as a fun removal option.

I see the combo with blood artist/blood seeker + illness in the ranks + hunted phantasm/hunted troll. But your artist wil die before you can do it unless you play it last but it will still die, so maybe zealous persecution so your creatues won't die
