Sideboard

It's like aristocrats, but with more math!

This deck functions extremely well on a budget -- the main board comes to $50 or less on TCG/CK, not including basic lands. Sideboard includes some reasonable upgrades of $5 or less. All key combo pieces are extremely affordable.

We can achieve a win on turn 6-8 with reasonably high consistency. Notable win combos:

Creature with Persist + creature that adds a +1/+1 counter on ETB (Anafenza, Good Fortune Unicorn, Juniper Order Ranger) + free sac outlet = infinite etb/ltbs (combo with a drain effect for a win)

Tayam + creature with persist/undying + free sac outlet + Priest of Gix/Cathodion = infinitely ebts/ltbs 1. Sacrifice Persist/Undying creature. It returns with 2 counters (vigilance from Tayam plus persist/undying counter) 2. Sacrifice mana generator (priest of gix/cathodion) 3. Remove all 3 counters from your 2 creatures and pay 3 mana to trigger Tayam; return mana generator to the battlefield. Rinse and repeat. (Note that to do this with Cathodion, you need a third counter from a separate creature, since you need to sacrifice it to gain the mana for Tayam's ability)

Some more tips:

  • Devoted Druid and Wall of Roots are insane as they provide both counters and mana needed to activate Tayam.
  • Tayam's ability should be looked at as a source of card advantage to dig for your combos. Ramp is extremely important as the deck is surprisingly mana hungry. In spite of having a low curve, it relies on Tayam's ability to quickly dig for combo pieces.
  • Abzan has lots of great answers to help keep you alive while you fish through your deck as well, so make sure to pack enough removal for your meta.
  • When making deckbuilding tweaks, remember that we are playing a combo deck, NOT a value-based deck looking to grind out a late-game win. For that reason, cards like Rally the Ancestors are very tempting but should be excluded. What we really care about is the following:
  • Creatures with undying/persist that cost 3 or less
  • Free sacrifice outlets that cost 3 or less
  • Efficient ways to generate +1/+1 counters (i.e. on creature ETB)
  • Efficient sources of ramp/card advantage, preferably permanents costing 3 or less (signets/talismans are great if you have them but they would take us out of budget)
