Straightforward Mono-Red Burn for modern.

Game Plan

Play creatures to get in early beats, then throw burn spells at your opponent until you win or go down in a blaze of glory. Sounds simple, but actually requires quite a bit of thinking and good sequencing on your part.

  • You typically won't get many prowess triggers on T1 Monastery Swiftspear, as you usually want to play another creature on T2. That's okay.
  • Magma Jet is much better than it seems. Prioritize scrying for a good play next turn over maximising face damage and/or prowess triggers on Swiftspear this turn.
  • Searing Blaze is the best way to remove opponent's creatures, as you need all your other spells to go directly to the face. However, it is quite poor against creature-light decks, as it needs a valid target.
  • Hold on to your Skullcracks until your opponent plays lifegain (Kitchen Finks, Siege Rhino, etc.). It can also be used to cancel the damage prevention of creatures with protection from red (Kor Firewalker) if they block.
  • Against control, think about how/when to play Rift Bolt. If you suspend it, your opponent wont get to counter it until your next upkeep. While this removes the element of surprise, it also meant you will have more mana available for things like Mana Leak.

Sideboard

Being in only one color, our sideboard options are very limited. The biggest drawback is that we don't have any way whatsoever of dealing with enchantments.

Updates Add

Added Goblin Guides and reworked the sideboard somewhat. This is now officially not a budget deck anymore.
