The Oncoming Storm - Super Budget Competitive

Modern* Budget Combo Competitive Goblins Mono-Red Storm

LusciousCabbage

Sideboard

This deck was in no way my idea and I am not taking credit for it. However, I did make modifications to the original to make it more consistent for me. Just basics and Fungal Reaches for storing mana. The decks runs consistently and goes off around turn 3-4 but I've had it go off on turn 2 a few times. It is competitive, winning me several FNMs and casual games. I plan to take it to a modern open and seeing how it fairs. The deck is also VERY budget. The listed price on the side says about $100 but through trading and my local LGS with help from different singles sites, I purchased it all for $70. For a deck that wins consistently in this modern format being this cheap, it is a perfect deck for someone wanting to get into a serious modern match.

How to Storm

  1. Use the draw and cycle spells to get a hand of mana producers and at least one card to let you storm. These are Empty the Warrens and Young Pyromancer.

  2. The best turn I've found to storm out is either turn 4 or 6, providing you have at least 5 lands or 4 lands and 1 Fungal Reaches with some storage counters on it.

  3. Fire off Desperate Ritual and/or Pyretic Ritual with Manamorphose for card draw and card fixing. Also this fills your mana pool to about 6-8 depending on your situation.

  4. Use 2 mana to play Goblin Bushwhacker for its kicker cost.

  5. Play Empty the Warrens for a storm of 8 and get 16 2/1s with haste.

  6. Swing for massive damage.

If you can get a higher storm count, it makes is easier to deliver lethal by turn 6 or so. If you can get to Past in Flames during your storm and card cycling, this deck can go through itself and produce an absurd amount of mana so you can play Empty the Warrens 8 times not allowing for Pyromancer Ascension copies. Have fun, and happy storming.

Also, this deck IS competitive. I've gone up against a few modern decks worth several hundred dollars, running Tarmogoyf, Splinter Twin, control, you name it...this deck has beat at least one of each common modern deck type. The only real trouble it has, is against heavy life-gain decks. If you plan your card filters and your mana right, this deck can easily go through itself and make 300+ 3/1s with haste by turn 3, which is just crazy. I'm not sure what card combo makes this possible because I've only stumbled upon it 3 times in playtests, but if it can do that, I'm more than happy.

Updates Add

So it's been about 6 months since I last played Magic, so I've decided to stop playing Standard (due to how expensive it is to keep up with) and focus exclusively on eternal formats. From revisiting this deck since it's conception almost a year ago, I've made several changes to both boards while retaining a modest price tag.

A suite of fetches have been added for thinning mostly. At this point the deck can't run without them.

Creature count has been reduced significantly and a playset of Simian Spirit Guide has been added for significant instant speed ramp. Remember to play all goblin bushwackers BEFORE you Empty the Warrens as the bushwacker counts toward storm and nets 2 more goblins.

Spell list has been optimized for speed as well as constancy, now sporting a few "free" spells to help get through the deck. I should also note that Gitaxian Probe works great in the late game in conjunction with Pyromancer Ascension as well as most of the spells that lose a lot of value the longer the game goes.

In summary, this is my goto deck for modern since it's consistent, easy to use, fun to pilot, and most of all WINS GAMES. There are very few times where this deck wiffs and with the sideboard, it can go into game 2 confidently. And finally, don't let storming out be your only way to win. I've won games off of Ascension's copies of Lightning Bolt, no joke.
