hooo boy m21 time —June 14, 2020

oh boy, here i go procrastinating again.

m21 is fuggin' EXCITING. lotta new cards with fun implications and uses, some crazy big spells, and... well, a lot that works better in other builds lol! but, anyway, here's some stuff that stood out to me that i'm gonna play around with in this build.

Niambi, Esteemed Speaker - if i ran more legendaries this would be such a good fit. lifegain at instant speed that can also protect against hate, plus the ability to then discard said card back into the grave for easy retrieval. shame that most of the power pieces in the build right now aren't legendary! ah well, gonna be a fun commander on her own for sure.

Lofty Denial - sure! deck has plenty of fliers that i'd like to be able to protect. Horobi, Death's Wail, Vilis, Broker of Blood, Emeria Shepherd to name a few, and, well, Zur the Enchanter *f-etch* is there too.

Fabled Passage - aay a reprint! this is on my buylist right now, here's hoping i can save a few bucks.

Idol of Endurance - a surprisingly safe value option here. grabs Cephalid Illusionist, Thassa's Oracle, Oreskos Explorer, Grand Abolisher, Hedron Crab, Topplegeist.... a few others as well. really light on color requirements as well, no pun intended. pretty tempting include, but it also feels a good bit greedy.. good payoff tho!

Angelic Ascension - removal for a great price; only trade-off is that Zur the Enchanter *f-etch* gets beaten to death! great if you're masochistic.

Peer into the Abyss - no way to freely cast sorceries, but if there was this would be incredible with how malleable life is in this list anyways.

Liliana, Waker of the Dead - that -3 is awful nice since it doesn't only care about creatures. emblem is great (shocker), +1 can theoretically provide a discard outlet.... i guess?

Teferi, Master of Time - 4 loots per cycle LOL. almost as good as Ashiok, Dream Render just because of that, but then has the additional ability to phase something out. problem is, i feel he'd be sub-par anywhere past turn 5-6... though, perhaps not. discard outlets are always alright. i guess with me running Spatial Binding, i can also... counter an opposing -3 now? this year's weird. oh yeah, that ult is there, too. all that said, the 4cmc slot is pretty barren as-is due to Zur the Enchanter *f-etch* being a top priority, but i mean... an early Teferi, Master of Time sounds downright disgusting. really feel like i need to play some games w/ him in to see what kind of situations pop up.

Grim Tutor - people are speculating that with this reprint, the card will soon go below $10. i'm game! feels less dirty than dropping a Demonic Tutor for sure, though as with any instant & sorcery, i find it harder to include.

Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose - a while back, i had considered adding in Vizkopa Guildmage due to its ability to instagib everyone with an optimal usage of Resolute Archangel. realistically, vizkopa would still be a great include as an alternate win-con, since they can also "target", and Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose would be an interesting alternative to them. no mana investment, but only hits one opponent. still under 3cmc, so worth considering.

Archfiend's Vessel - huh. neat little dude. wouldn't be difficult whatsoever to get the 5/5, but only being able to use em once is pretty whatever. i'd love to see more cards with this type of effect.

Rousing Read - sure! making Sun Titan or Nezahal, Primal Tide could lead to much easier lethals with Magister Sphinx, and the loot-esque effect is pretty great to have access to with Zur the Enchanter *f-etch*.

Waker of Waves - last but not least, the first card that truly screams "put me into your build i'm perfect for it, dumbass" to me. 1U1C to technically cycle it from the hand with an added bonus. dude's a huge reanimation target in the grave, just fine to mill at any stage of the game, anti-token, and... well, yeah, it's a 7/7! big numbers like that spice up Magister Sphinx so, so much. REALLY solid include that i'd like to find room for eventually.

bonus round: Village Rites - i absolutely LOVE the flavor of this one. the name, art, flavor text, card effect all work together to create a nightmarish scenario that feels all too familiar. not much more to be said on it!

really fun selection to play with here. nothing blatantly broken, just a lot to think about. i like it this way. i appreciate the work WOTC is doing right now; none of these cards seem too creeped in power; just interesting and fresh.

i kinda want to make a Kaervek, the Spiteful build as well, though i'm not sure how i'd get that above a 6 lol.
