persist, cauldron, etc playtest results... —May 12, 2021
Goldfished a bunch and did some higher power games with the cauldron and Aboshan. TL;DR is that cauldron is entirely unnecessary along-side Spatial Binding and Unspeakable Symbol, while Aboshan, Cephalid Emperor is... situational. Considering they replaced Magister of Worth though, another highly situational card, this isn't entirely bad. High-cmc creatures with free targeting abilities are hard to come by.
Persist abilities with Unspeakable Symbol are a lot of fun to theorycraft, though. Gonna try some stuff out. I'm leaving in Glen Elendra Archmage for now as a source of reusable interaction, and I'm hoping that with the improved manabase I have nowadays her and Aboshan, Cephalid Emperor's abilities will be more consistently usable.
Demonic Tutor is getting the boot for Spectral Steel. I feel like it's both more fun and flexible for the power level I'm keeping this deck in. Also, going hard on mill, then using it's graveyard effect to return Necromancy is a really strong and adaptable move. From there either Kederekt Leviathan or Resolute Archangel can be brought back to cover you.
Finally, Ashiok, Dream Render is out for Mesmeric Orb. I didn't like the anti-tutor effect since it shut down a lot of stuff it shouldn't in mid-power. Losing the graveyard hate hurts, but I'm thinking that with Mesmeric Orb milling everybody that more targets for Animate Dead will present themselves at all stages of the game.
