I Just Think Rats Are Neat

Commander / EDH Casual Mono-Black Rats

I just think they're neat!

This is a mostly rat tribal Marrow-Gnawer– er, I mean Ashcoat Bear– I mean Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm deck that has a few other things to take advantage of having lots of disposable rats.

Other themes include:

  • Evasion + Ninjutsu (Good ol' Ink-Eyes)
  • Card Disadvantage, mostly by discard but also with those 2 nezumi that decrease opponents' hand sizes
  • Sacrifice and a little morbid-esque
  • Lots of cute rats, because if you don't tell the Sinuous Vermin they're cute they'll strangle you to death

Fun Rat Fact! Feeding the blood of your enemies to your rats keeps their coats healthy and shiny! Squeak! >'.'<

Although there's some powerful (read: expensive) cards in here, this isn't really meant to be competitive. I just want a place to put all my rats.

There's some amount of interaction, but honestly not much in the way of wipes and nothing's particularly optimal.

Updates Add

I got lucky with a Jumpstart game and pulled the Rats pack! Move over Marrow-Gnawer, we've got a new rat in town and they're from the future!

Added:

  • New Commander! Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm: Card Ratdvantage and Recursion at the mere cost of a few milled cards, what's not to love! And they're CMC 4 instead of 5!
  • Karumonix, the Rat King: Not the most splashy, only digging for rats on ETB, but they do make for a fun toxic surprise!
  • Patriarch's Bidding: A little extra recursion just because I have one, though given Ashcoat it may not be necessary. Maybe I should get an Elixir or something that will shove my graveyard back into my library instead. It'd be pretty hilarious to fill the graveyard then pull everything out and sac rat tokens to play more rats, though.

Removed:

  • Soulreaper of Mogis: a bit of card advantage, though of course the amusing part is that wish Ashcoat I could get back any rats I sac sooo maybe these would actually be better than some other cards?
  • Witch's Cauldron: Basically just the same as the other two in the list.
  • Dockside Chef
