I got the opportunity to play this weekend after a long time away, and had a blast with the newest version of the deck!

Won a game after Tibalt's Trickery turned a 9x Green Sun's Zenith into an unplayable land. Purphoros ended up killing the table a few turns later.

Descent into Avernus was an allstar, and pretty well received across the whole table. This is the epitome of Red effects to me, and loved having it out.

Got to use Memory Jar for the first time in probably years and I stand by this being the best wheel effect available to Red.

The deck is just as bursty and unpredictable as ever. I wish we had even a little bit of lifegain to combat all the sources of self damage, but I can't complain. I was a constant element in every game.

The addition of treasures was exactly what this deck needed. I played more aggressive with my lands than I've ever been able to thanks to them.

This particular makeup of lands, ramp, and treasures felt just right, riding the edge of too many and too few just like I like, but I could see someone needing as many as 34 lands if they didn't have as many fetches or treasure cards.

It looks like I will be able to play 8-10x more often than I have been the last year, so I will be doing a lot more tuning and updates than I have been. Stay tuned!

Liquidbeaver Great to hear on the performance and enjoyability.

As for life gain, Shadowspear might be a really good option

CoarselyRefined: Ib thanks you for your butt kissing, and chooses to ignore the "Probably one of" portion of your sentence.

What are your thoughts on Sardian Avenger?

sdidonato says... #5

I pre-ordered my copy of Sardian Acenger since my playgroup uses a lot of treasures and mana rocks to begin with, plus it pairs well with Descent into Avernus

Brazen Cannonade

I don't think I could have hand picked a better card for Ib....

What an awesome new addition. SO. EXCITED.

I was about to recommend Brazen Cannonade until I scrolled down and saw your last comment lol. Excellent deck and primer. Definitely makes me want to step up my primer writing some more.

Hiya, Liquidbeaver! Any news and/or updates for this list? Lotsa new cards being released, including Solphim, Mayhem Dominus. Can't wait to hear how the deck has been playing with your recent changes!

I did a quick search to find other new cards to consider for the list (other than the suggested Solphim above). Some are obviously better than others, but they are

Roar of Resistance - Haste to tokens AND you can pump ANY creature, whether you own it or not!

Exuberant Fuseling - At first glance it seems like this would work well with your treasure subtheme. Although, it would take a bit to setup up and could be a waste to just sac it, if Ib was out.

Gleeful Demolition - Pay a red and sac a treasure (so "2 mana" total) or another artifact to create 3x 1/1 gobos. Kind of wish it was instant speed though.

Koth, Fire of Resistance - Not sure what to think about this one. Seems okay-ish. I guess it does help get lands out of your deck, but it has to live for 3 full cycles to ult.. IDK.. maybe I'm missing something here

Rasaru: I've been super busy at work and the release schedule of new cards is super overwhelming, but yes I am also excited! Solphim is definitely going right in. Not only is it a nicely costed doubler (it honestly might replace Fiery Emancipation...) but having a 2nd creature in the deck that can survive a boardwipe is pretty nice. If someone is playing with Gratuitous Violence instead of Goblin Goliath (GG is a weird set that breaks and delists the deck which is why it is in the sideboard) I would absolutely replace Violence with Solphim.

I think Gleeful Demolition is definitely good enough for the deck, and them being Phyrexian Goblins means they still work with Ib's sacrifice.

As for Koth, in my playgroup at least, planeswalkers only really get the chance to do their entry ability before dying, and red doesn't have many planeswalkers with gamechanging +'s. My hope is that one day they make a Slobad planeswalker (apparently he was a PW for a day or something?!) and that it is good enough to run in here.

I hope to do another catchup run on the last set (I think I am only one behind?) very soon to do deck changes, and I will update as soon as I do!

Also, I played again recently with 3 people where each of us won once, and the treasure subtheme definitely made Ib a contender in all of the games. This is the strongest the deck has been, no question, and the couple chaos cards sprinkled in has also made it the most fun version so far.

City on Fire

Welp, this is an easy swap for Fiery Emancipation if I ever saw one...

Fiery Emancipation out for City on Fire: Because duh.

Rundvelt Hordemaster out for Solphim, Mayhem Dominus: I discovered after playing with Rundvelt once that the card doesn't say "may", so it is very easy to deck yourself during a boardwipe.

End the Festivities out for Brazen Cannonade: End isn't bad, I just caught myself always just throwing it on there just because, it isn't often going to do anything pivotal and the current path of the deck favors the big, boisterous, risky plays.

For once I also have an idea where my next swaps will come from: Professional Face-Breaker/Rain of Riches/Rose Room Treasurer. Of these 3 I think Rose Room Treasurer has actually performed the best, Rain has been too costly, and Face-breaker doesn't trigger all that often as most of my combats are attempting an alpha strike on the board. I would love to trade these out for other treasure generators that fit the bill.

Moria Marauder

More ugly cousins coming to join the ranks! Ib will be sure to sacrifice them before the final assault so that they don't make us deck ourselves.

What Ib doesn't want anyone to know is that he liked dragons. Likes them likes them. He's just Donkey from Shrek but with hair consolidated in fewer places.

Gonna throw out a curveball here, and going to find a spot for a card I think could lead to a lot of fun interactions:

Maskwood Nexus

This would give a ton of Goblin-matters card a boost of power, give tutors and freecast effects more hits, and would even combo in a very interesting way with Ib and this next card:

Fall of Cair Andros

Those two might have to go in just due to the fun factor alone...

I finally finished my "vacation" (courtesy of our Dear Leader) in the Southern Booger Mines and was able to review the last few sets.

Say hello to our newest friends*!

Gimli, Counter of Kills: Decent boardwipe dissuasion and adds a nice layer of extra damage to everything we're doing anyway.

Pain Distributor: Nice pressure in general due to the number of artifacts that leave play naturally, but also helps make Descent into Avernus more one-sided.

Fall of Cair Andros: Yes they are dirty Orcians, but with the amount of noncombat damage dealt by this deck the Army should have a strong board presence. Ties into Toralf, God of Fury  Flip, the damage doublers/triplers, Skirk Fire Marshal, and Blasphemous Act very well.

There and Back Again: Has all the elements requested in Ib's latest agenda.

Maskwood Nexus: While not game-changing on it's own when it comes out, I think the fun factor of what it enables is worth testing out.

Mines of Moria: Not sure if this makes the cut, but it's easy enough to swap a land for a land for testing.

Say goodbye to these dishonorable discharges!:

(Your mother's baby name for you! - Ib Halfheart)

Professional Face-Breaker: Can't say I ever got the use the first ability due to how often my damage was non-combat, and is too spendy for a little bit of quasi-draw.

Rose Room Treasurer: Looks decent at face value, but didn't hold its weight in actual play.

Grenzo, Havoc Raiser: Not comfortable with this removal, so will be the first one that goes back in if any additions are sub par.

Rain of Riches: I think in a deck built to cascade better this would make a bigger impact, but all it really got me is two treasures for . Oof.

Big Score: Another hard decision, and likely to come back after testing. Either that or an actual draw engine of some sort?

Riveteers Overlook: My landbase has been pretty refined for a long time, so this was literally only used for the pretty inconsequential 1 life. Easy cut.

That's it for now. Let me know what you think!

Some good ol' fashioned, home grown, totally legal - Mob Justice

This is a very appealing card at pretty much any time I have a boardstate, or when Nemesis Mask is out, but is the cost too high?

October 1, 2023 11:30 a.m.

Rasaru says... #21

While Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer has a huge amount of potential, it does require some sort of board state to be effective. If you draw this card later in the game and had to pay 5 into it, when part of your sub-strategy is to sack mountains, will you have enough to play it? My guess is no. I'd rather run something more like Invasion Plans that caters more to the everything has to block a single kamikaze goblin strategy :D

I also recently threw in The One Ring to protect myself and give me access to a bit of additional draw. If only the Ring could tempt Ib....

can I ask why is Gratuitous Violence over Fiery Emancipation?

November 8, 2023 7:48 a.m.

Liquidbeaver says... #23

Ib has had me really busy in the toenail mines, but he let me take a day off after a 3 month shift to look at new cards.

AcehGratuitous Violence is just a placeholder for Goblin Goliath. Even though it is a legal card the set it came in doesn't work quite right, so if I put it in the mainboard the deck gets delisted.

Looking through the spoilers and I am very excited about this card:

Connecting the Dots

That's a ton of potential draw, and being an enchantment instead of an artifact means we can actually let it sit out without a lot of worry. Great card.

Absolutely loving this deck very well done sir!

My only issue currently is what to drop for the Mox's, slightly leaning towards just dropping 2 mountains but obviously counter productive to the game plan.. I'm also not quite sold on Memory Jar I love just being disruptive and throwing Wheel of Fortune down and seeing my friends reactions but I do see with Goblin Welder how jar is a wheel on steroids! My biggest fear is the amount of artifact hate my group has with one person's life goal to mill you out, another plays Sen Triplets exclusively so any tips to get around those would be much appreciated!

Rasaru says... #25

ShamLush Although Ib is always seeking new friends to exploit, I've noticed he gets anxious around twins and/or triplets.. I'd recommend leaving that player at home and finding a new fourth. You know... for Ib's sake...
