rochdalekilla9 Very happy you enjoyed it! I am also very pleased with the deck. I think it may need some more fine tuning to the mana base, will be reviewing over the next few days. Watch for changes.

Thanks!

Reworked the Mana base a bit as well as dropped to 2x Goblin Rabblemaster Main board and dropped 1x Lightning Strike and1x Magma Jet to move the 4x Nyx-Fleece Ram Mainboard.

Considering removing the Magma Jet 's to add 1x Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker and 1x Sorin, Solemn Visitor to run 3of each.....

Ghost jeez I love the build. Question I have is 4x Nyx-Fleece Ram a necessity?

Ugggghhh, yes and no is the best answer :). Its something you like seeing in the opening hand as long as it comes with a White Mana source.... The White Mana sources in the build are primarily pain lands, that I think I actually need to run more of to consistently hit the early single and double white drops.

So the sheep is a wall, as well as counteracting the effects of the pain lands. This is good because while the deck looks Aggro, 60-70% of the time it will run mid-range, in which case Aggro punishes me unless I topdeck burn like a god or early Butcher/Sorin for lifelink.

Have not thoroughly tested, will post results in the next day or so.

Yeah I was looking at that it might not turn out as well as you'd like against aggro. Pulling the mana you need on turn 3-4 is gonna be bad since those are crucial turns in the current standard format.

Here check out my Mardu midrange build and let me know what you think.

Yeah, just kind of a test run, dropped to 3of.

See how it plays over the next few days. I have a GPT qualifier on Saturday so still plenty of time to finalize :)

Hopefully the PT on the weekend changed up the Meta a bit and Aggro will have less of a showing.

Changes

Dropped Goblin Rabblemaster from the build all together. Gonna test and see if this works. Also dropped Lightning Strike for more Magma Jet to scry faster. Not sure if I like this change or not yet.....

Added 4x Monastery Swiftspear and added 1 to go to 4x Nyx-Fleece Ram . Again, testing this stuff to see if it plays smoother.

Re ran the lands, dropped down to 22 as I was getting flooded alot with 24.

Let me know your thoughts!

Have an extra Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker and Sorin, Solemn Visitor Whats everyones thoughts of going to 3of each of them?

October 28, 2014 9:34 a.m.

I think it is a terrible idea to drop any of the Goblin Rabblemaster s. What makes this deck run so well is having the goblins pop out during your attack phase, enabling you to sacrifice them for your butcher. Yes Bloodsoaked Champion can be utilized to do that too and Brimaz, King of Oreskos is a token generator, but Brimaz has to attack or block in order to create tokens. Goblin Rabblemaster doesn't actually have to attack. What makes Butcher of the Horde so remarkable is conceivably you can give him haste, lifelink and vigilance all at once. If you take the Goblin Rabblemaster out, you lessen your chances of this happening. I think you're freaking out over aggro decks and really destroying what makes this deck so good. I don't like the inclusion of Nyx-Fleece Ram in your mainboard. Should remain in your sb. Yes he's annoying, yes he can block, but he's not a game changer by any stretch of the imagination. I also don't like Monastery Swiftspear in this deck period. You're trying to make this deck something it's not. If you're truly worried so much about aggro, keep Bile Blight , Drown in Sorrow and Anger of the Gods in your sb. But i feel like you're destroying a good chunk of your deck because you fear going up against aggro.

October 28, 2014 9:40 a.m.

Also, you don't need three of Sorin, Solemn Visitor or Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker . 2 of each is plenty, especially with the scry...well now you brought down the number of Magma Jet s you had to put in Mardu Ascendancy . I think you need to figure out what you want this deck to be because you're definitely going away from your original intentions.

Just messing with some ideas, I dont think the Mardu Ascendancy will stay.

As for the Goblin Rabblemaster , I just find he does not do enough work in the deck.... Unless Butcher of the Horde is out, his tokens are fairly useless. And even then, its only to give him Haste. Sorin, Solemn Visitor Does more work giving him Lifelink then feeding him does.

I am dropping the Ascendancys again, adding back in the Magma Jet and going to try going to 3of Sorin.

Nyx-Fleece Ram - This guy is also here to counteract the effects of soooo much pain in the lands in order to make the mana drops consistent. Until I can get a lifelinked Butcher out. There have been plenty of games where I have whittled myself down to ~10 life just from lands..... As well as the sheep being an Aggro wall, but I wanted to clarify that its not the ONLY reason he is in the MB ATM.

rochdalekilla9 Check it now.

I like the Swiftspear in the build because of all the non-creature spells. she can get fairly large as well as Sorin buffing her. Again, Not sold on her here, but at least going to test it.

Sticking with the 4of Goblin Rabblemaster for the time being. Testing has proven that Swiftspear does not fit well....

Added back 4x Chief of the Edge for a 2drop 3/2 with a buff. Need to beef up the creature base, as well as maintain a little more aggro. I think this helps. Testing of the current build shows solid fundamentals. 3of Sorin, Solemn Visitor also looks to be a good solid number.

I'm curious about something. I run a list similar to this and your sideboard looks like one of those transformational sideboards. But how would you side against G/R monsters, Temur monsters and Abzan Midrange?

November 3, 2014 11:45 a.m.

xGhostx says... #16

Really it all depends on exactly how their build is running. Aggro builds see the Sheep come in, Burn stay, Bile Blight and the Soldiers.

More mid-range builds see more control, Bile Blight , Banishing Light , Utter End

Anything White sees Stormbreath Dragon

Typically I drop Thoughtseize , Magma Jet , 1 Brimaz, King of Oreskos Chief of the Edge and/or Bloodsoaked Champion

The SB has been built to as you said, transform the deck. It makes it pretty versatile.

November 3, 2014 2:32 p.m.

You should really consider Deflecting Palm for your sideboard. It works wonders against big creature decks, high volume burn decks and others. It was the newest addition to my sb and I brought them in quite often with great results. I'm not a huge fan of the inclusion of Chief of the Edge in here. I ran a Mardu Token deck that had both Chiefs in it and I'd rather have more burn/kill spells in this kind of deck than having the Chief of the Edge . I understand the reasoning behind putting him in, but I feel like his spot would be better utilized by other cards.

November 4, 2014 12:27 a.m.

xGhostx says... #18

I like Chief of the Edge as the 2drop here right now, not really for the ability, but more for the 3/2 beater for 2.

I like the idea of Deflecting Palm I may have to toy with that, For now, I have put this deck to the side and am focusing on an Abzan build. Take a look and let me know your thoughts.

When I tested with Deflecting Palm I found I never ever got a use for it. Sure it helps against a 10/10 Genesis Hydra but then again a Crackling Doom does too. And on top of that... What would you take out of the sideboard for it? Assuming you're not gonna main it.

November 5, 2014 5:35 a.m.

I guess since my version of this deck has 4x Crackling Doom, 4x Magma Jet, 3x Lightning Strike and 4x Stoke the Flames, mine is more about dwindling their life total down until I can attack with everything I have, regardless if I am going to kill them. Because then they'll think they have the win, swing with everything, and I use Deflecting Palm to hit them with their own creature and I win the game. Against burn decks, Deflecting Palm does plenty of work. Without it, I wouldn't have won or would have had a much harder time winning against a ridiculous Gruul Monsters deck. And I would replace the Soldier of the Pantheon with Deflecting Palm. But again, it may just be because of the area I play in. Despite the wedge decks, the Soldier doesn't really do a hell of a lot for me which did surprise me, hence the reason I took them out. Deflecting Palm is merely a suggestion. I had it in the MB before realizing it should be SB. I think it is great but it isn't for everyone. It being in the SB, no one really sees it coming, so it acts as a lethal surprise.

November 5, 2014 10:10 a.m.

Two more things. I recently took out Thoughtseize altogether and may find room for it in the SB. It just wasn't doing it for me. I love the card and WANT it in there, but the life loss and honestly the hands I were seeing just weren't worth it. I added Hordeling Outburst instead and some Lightning Strike. The Outburst is fantastic for Butcher of the Horde, creates little annoying blockers and can be so versatile. I flirted with the idea of putting Crater's Claws in here, but scrapped that idea despite the fun it could be.

November 5, 2014 10:14 a.m.

And I swear I am blowing up your feed here. Lol. But how much does Brimaz, King of Oreskos do for you? I like him and all but have been toying with the idea of taking him out of my deck completely. I rarely get to use him, I generally have to wait until the turn after I play him to get anything out of him and I feel like I may get more use out of Nyx-Fleece Ram. I've recently added Wingmate Roc as a 2 of in my deck for some extra life/fliers, but I'm still on the fence about Brimaz. This is my deck thus far Slave of Mardu. My deck has been running amazingly but i feel I can do more...

I really liked Brimaz, King of Oreskos in the build, he was a solid player. I really have not been putting much dev into this build over the last few days as I switched gears towards a mid-range Abzan build, When Mardu goes Abzan

I played in a GTP Qualifier with this Mardu build on the weekend and just got crushed by Abzan which was in full force. I took alot of the core concepts from this deck, and moved to Abzan by dropping the Red and adding Green. So far, I am very happy with the progress. Its more stable, more consistent and more versatile.

I have not scrapped this Mardu build yet, as I did have alot of fun with it. Just adapting to the current Meta. I still plan on playing this deck for a while yet, just will be running the Abzan build competitively.

For the record, Brimaz, King of Oreskos does MUCH MORE work in Abzan lol
