Sideboard

I wondered one day what artifacts I would have if Magic were real and I could learn/cast spells. I set up some rules:

  1. I would limit the total number of spells to the number of spaces in a two-by-two mini Monster Protectors card book (160 spaces, I believe). Addendum: Battle of Wits is pushing me into a 3x3 binder which is closer to 300 spells.

  2. I would only put in spells (cards) that I personally own. Cards I could grab from my collection and put into a deck.

  3. The casting range of my spells I set to roughly the size of a football field area around me or to my line of sight but spells cast could leave my casting range limit. In other words, my Lightning Bolt could only strike in my line of sight or within my range restriction but I could cast Jump on my cat and she could fly off wherever she wanted to.

  4. Mana is produced by the land around me so if Im in a swamp, then thats the only land I can draw from. Obviously I'm not going to go walking around the city with an Island strapped to my back. Thankfully, I have a little infinite mana combo in my card collection.

  5. I have limitation based on my own strength of how much I can carry (I am, however, a fairly strong person) so there is a personal limit on the total amount of artifact weight that I can carry. That is why I only have two large weapons and would not be able to wield both with a shield. I am capable of carrying two though.

  6. Creatures are tricky. If I summoned another person, Jen from across the street, she wouldn't necessarily do what I wanted her to do. And if it was someone who didn't know me, they might be quite frustrated that I had summoned them. Similarly, an animal might just as easily attack me or run away before attacking an enemy. As such, I only included creatures that I see as mindless/capable of being controlled as part of the spell that summons them; ie, elementals, phantoms, illusions, etc. The exception to this is Isamaru. I am a dog person and will generally have a companion animal. I see Isa as my pet. You will see spells that allow me to summon other animals but I do not see these as animals to serve me or they are inherently short lived and would be under my control for their short existence. I like the idea of being able to make a tree pop into existence Sprout along with squirrels Chatter of the Squirrel, tidal waves Tidal Wave, various lightning elementals Ball Lightning Lightning Serpent, and creatures that essentially don't exist Phantasmal Bear Phantasmal Dragon.

  7. There would be spells I would learn for the heck of it so it doesn't have to be an optimal build Chain Lightning . This is also why joke cards are allowed in my spellbook and why there are so many redundancies Fog Darkness Divine Light. There are also cards for the implication that the name gives Charisma Sex Appeal Telekinesis Telepathy Teleport Cooperation Precognition. Druidic Satchel I added because I needed a bag to carry the artifact trinkets that I had with me.

  8. I needed to define a few abilities and aspects of the game. Tapping was comparable to sleep or exhaustion, with Un-Tapping being comparable to alertness or being awake, power was strength, toughness was, well, toughness, first strike was comparable to speed of action, Deathtouch is limited to a fight so essentially there is intent that couples with it. I dont kill someone by giving them a pat on the back.

A players Hand became the thoughts at the forefront of the mind. The library then becomes the knowledge that could be thought of by a person. The graveyard became, pretty much, a limbo where things were lost like forgotten information, the physical form of a person or object (though the matter from an object might still exist) or a residing place for a soul.

Obviously any time a new set is released or a preferable art style comes to my attention, the spellbook is altered. As such, this is continually in flux but I am keeping myself within that 360 card limit. I will attempt to remember to keep a record of cards that were part of the book and are not any longer by listing obsolete cards in the side board.
