I finally got a full U Tron deck together, gonna give it some play testing today. It's quite a bit different and I will probably add some Ratchet Bombs which I traded for, but they haven't arrived yet. Any thoughts? Not really Budget U Tron

@Zulama: I'd love to playtest against you. The reason I don't run Cyclonic Rift is because it does not provide the cantrip aspect that Repeal provides. And it's overload cost is too much. Against the aggro decks out there it's overload doesn't do enough even if I do manage to hit it. And otherwise it is a bounce spell. They can just play it again. Repeal does the same except for it helps you dig for an answer as well as slow them down. I will test your idea (I already have tested it a bit). If I were to make the change, what would you recommend taking out? Thanks.

Thanks for your quick reply, I really think that having Fabricate is not really worth it unless your also running a Batterskull, so cut that card for a Cyclonic Rift. I am not a huge fan of Fabricate because it doesn't really come with a 2/2 creature. Also I think you should have another Island over a Talisman of Dominance, as it will help fixing your mana a bit more. Also i don't really think you need more then 3 copies of Repeal, but its really up to you. I also think that your sideboard could add additional removal. Oath of the Gatewatch added a really good removal card for this deck which is Spatial Contortion. Add me in Cockatrice so we can talk more later about this.

IzzetFanatic - First off I just wanted to say thanks for the primer and great detail of the deck. When I got into Mono-U Tron I found your deck and used it as my basis. I did have a question for you though. I am probably going to take my blue tron deck "Counters, Wurmcoil, Titan, then Ugin. Beat that." to GP Charlotte within a month and was wondering, 1) could you take a look and tell me what you think of my version? (I tried to tag it but it kept saying error. Will try to fix it and maybe come back to tag) 2) How do you think this deck does against the newest control deck Sword of the Meek + Thopter Foundry ? I have yet to be able to playtest against it, and where I live there isn't much magic so I probably won't be able to playtest until the day of or before the GP.

@Pheardemons: I am very sorry I have not responded. I had other commitments that made MTG less of a priority. Because of this I am very out of the loop. 1) I looked at the deck and I like it a lot. I do have a couple questions though. Are Kozilek and Batterskull really worth it. I have tested with both and decided I did not like them do to the fact that wurmcoil is almost always better instead of Batterskull and Kozilek is too much mana (it only ever is castable with tron which is not something I can rely on enough). Also how do you like Cyclonic Rift? I have always favored a third repeal because of the draw but I would like to know what you think. 2) I don't think you will run into that deck to be honest. In the unlikely scenario that you do run into it, don't let the Foundry resolve at all costs. You will not be able to deal with all the tokens. Overall I think the deck is a really interesting take on my deck and I'd love to hear how it did/ does. Good luck if GP Charlotte hasn't happened and I hope you did well if it did already happen. Once again I am very sorry I did not respond sooner. I hope you can understand. Thanks

IzzetFanatic - It's all good man. People have lives outside of magic.

GP Charlotte is the weekend of the 20th. I'll let you know how it goes if you like.

Cyclonic Rift has actually played very well. I wasn't so sure at first because it almost requires tron to be active, but I've gotten the overload more often than not. Also if I need to stall or just get their board clear the overload is amazing. I plan on keeping it.

Kozilek, the Great Distortion has actually played pretty well. Granted it does suck to leave in my hand, but late game (if it resolves) it wins the game, or gives me a full hand. I am possibly considering taking it out, but I haven't found anything I'm willing to replace it for yet. It was just to take Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger's place in the deck, but I may switch in between them to playtest.

Batterskull I agree I probably do need to replace. Playtesting it has always been situational. I'll most likely put in the third Repeal.

Another question for you man. Why do you play both Ghost Quarter and Tectonic Edge? I've had problems with blue colors, granted I only play three Talisman of Dominances. I've actually been debating on switching to Tectonic Edge, I just don't like the fact that my opponent gets to keep 4 lands. Granted Ghost Quarter gives them a basic, but in a tron matchup it helps. I don't know if I want to keep it at all. I usually don't like seeing it.

How do you feel about Chalice of the Void mainboard? Honestly it is a little expensive for me right now, but one mainboard and one or two sideboard could be a good way to try and slow down those aggressive decks that win against me game one, with Tolaria West as another possible fetch for it and Academy Ruins or any of the tron lands. Any thoughts?

I'm new to modern, and so I started to make a budget infect deck, however I really like this deck! Afterwards I might try to acquire all of the cards for it.

Thank you for helping me to discover what looks to be an amazing deck I would want to play. +1.

Do you think you could clear the comments? There are quite a few from a while ago and it's pretty annoying for us mobile users to scroll down that far.

As far as the deck, could you tell me why Cyclonic Rift isn't included? You've probably already considered it, which is why I don't suggest it outright, but I would like to hear the reasoning. It seems like a very powerful effect(although not quite as good as it is in Commander).

There is no reason for this deck to be mono-blue. It just feels like RG Tron minus the consistency and inevitability. It would be fascinating to know why you made this decision.

I think this deck is still behind the Mono-U Tron shell now. Epiphany at the Drownyard and Spatial Contortion/Warping Wail are nowhere in the 75. Chalice of the Void is also a near must-have if within the budget (unfortunately outside of my own). I would look into these cards and make space for them in your list.

@buildingadeck: hey. Thanks so much for your opinion. I really like the cards that you have suggested (I love epiphany) however I'm going to give you my reasoning for why I like what my deck is doing right now as is (mind you, I have done like 2 play rest games so far). With the matter of Chalice of the Void, although I like the card I don't think that I should run it just because I have the budget to (I might have enough for one rn). The deck I am running as is is NON - chalice Tron. The two versions are different and neither are necessarily inferior to the other. While I do agree that the chalice Tron is a little better against affinity and other Aggro decks, the card also shuts down a fair amount ofMy own spells... I feel like this can greatly hinder the deck and also it is not very good against midrange decks. I feel like if I can run the deck without it when playing against Aggro decks, I will do that because the card does not improve midrange match ups.

Next, although Spatial Contortion and Warping Wail are both good utility cards I also firmly believe that the play style of mono u tron is not to completely out control your opponent but rather to stall until you can stabilize with a creature. Yes I understand that I made an exception to this when I added the Dismember however I think that dismember is better than both of those cards do to its ability to take out bigger creatures in the midrange match. I will play test with both in the stead of both some number of repeal and or dismember.

On the matter of epiphany, despite me loving this card I feel like it would only have a spot in the deck as maybe a one of. This is because the card is really only good in the late game when we have tron. And even at that point it is the type of card that will make you win more. And at the end of the day winning more is no different than winning. I might run one instead of a repeal but I will stick with the list I have now until I can get some real play testing in.

please send me your thoughts on the reasons I am not running those cards. Stay cool mate. Thanks for the comment.

Hey, of course. I know that originally I said that Chalice and non-chalice variants exist, but, to my knowledge, Shoktroopa (the originator of the deck) has also been converted to running Chalice. Chalice rarely shuts down our spells because our only T1 is Map.

As for Wail/Contortion, one of the major benefits of them against aggro is that you don't lose the life, and our midrange matchup is already favorable.

Having Tron out is not a winning state for the deck, which is why Epiphany is good. Epiphany helps you dig to what you need while also netting you some counters/creatures/etc.

I would check out the mtgsalvation forum for more information as Pierakor and Shoktroopa are both active and are excellent resources for the deck.

I've been following this deck for a while. What do you think about adding "Coax from the Blind Eternities" to the deck? If not in this build, what do you think about adding it to U-tron in general?

It's target would be (let me quote from a reddit user):

  • Newlamog
  • All is Dust
  • Old'rakul

I love the idea of U-Tron-Eldrazi becoming a thing.

@bloodredChili: I'm sorry for not responding to your comment sooner. In answer to your question, I do think that mono u tron decks (I am not going to change for now my list is running amazingly well) would have the cabability to adapt. What we can do with Coax is drop some of the less useful cards from the deck (platinum angle and sundering Titan) and add some eldrazi to the side. This then aloes us to fetch for them and run some board wipes like all is dust. With the new space made in main we can run some More kills and counters. I really like the idea. I think it would work if you wanted to build it and I could help you with any questions that you have about the deck. Another good source for this particular issue is buildingadeck he also has thought about this. But there are other mono u tron players out there too like Ohthenoises and ducttapedeckbox who would all be willing to help. Sorry about the late reply and I'm happy to help more and feel free to ask any more questions.

I am planning to in time build this great deck of yours IzzetFanatic, I just acquired a Ugin, the Spirit Dragon for the beginning of it, along with the Repeals. I also have Dismember, and Spatial Contortion, however besides those, I don't really have any of the rest yet. I'm just wondering though, what would you suggest could perhaps be changed if I was wanting to not spend as much on the mainboard/sideboard currently?

Here's my version of the deck: /20-06-16-mono-blue-tron/

However I'm wondering if it might be possible to give Emrakul, the Promised End a try in it somehow, along with Coax from the Blind Eternities? Or would this likely more go in a Red/Green version of the deck?

Mono Blue Tron

My mistake, here it is. Anyways I would just like to point out that I'm still quite new to modern.

Hi IzzetFanatic! Thanks a lot for your very elaborated answer. Funny thing I is didn't get around to check on tappedout due to a huge workload over the last months. I really like your decklist as it is now and I'm currently adapting mine to it. I gotta read the reasons for some changes as soon as I got time. I still like the idea to add an Eldrazi shell to the SB - but I'll entertain myself with your Control version for now. I still need to learn a lot about the archtypes and the meta. I tried reading all the Tier 1 and Tier 2 primers, but I'm more destined to learn by playing against them. I'm afraid I will fail hard on the local Modern events (and getting funny looks for playing Urza Tron isn't helping either) - nevertheless, I'm ready to show them what Urza Tron can do.

I really like the idea of the deck getting better the better I get. It's like a constant feedback to my skills. I also like the price of it. I think it's a reasonable price to spend on a hobby.

I played against mono-U Tron twice before while I was still playing Pyromancer Ascension Storm. I've never been made to feel so helpless in a game of Magic before once things started to go wrong.

+1 for deck name matching the experience.

IzzetFanatic says... #22

@Omeros: Storm is good. But its a decent matchup for U-Tron if they can counter the ascensions and Electromancers or get a Chalice of the Void out for 2.

It looks like a fun deck to play, I do have some suggestions, or cards for you to consider, or just cards in general that may do well in this deck:

Hope these suggestions help! Looks solid, +1! :)

Well I hate people, so I guess it's the deck for me!

The price of this deck is absolutely disgusting, but it looks really dang good! An upvote for you, sir! This would probably utterly destroy any of my decks though. :|
