Maybeboard

Land (1)

... if I have to call on every force from above and below."

If you have ever dreamt of playing 3 of the most iconic tribes in Magic in the same deck, this one is for you ! Kaalia allows you to play big angels, dragons and demon for nothing. All she has to do is attack.

This leads to the main problem with Kaalia : to let her stay on the board. This can sometimes be very difficult as she will on the one hand be a focused target by your opponents, and on the other hand sometimes be blocked by creatures that would kill her. And the average Converted Mana Cost (CMC) of your creatures is quite high, so you NEED Kaalia to stay alive. To counterbalance the deck's heavy dependance on its commander, I try to include less expensive creatures so that you can do something even if Kaalia is missing.

To avoid this problem, you have many ways to protect her in this deck :

  • Archangel Avacyn   : she can flash in to give Kaalia and all your creatures indestructible until the end of turn.

  • Avacyn, Angel of Hope : by making herself and all your permanents indestructible, she makes very difficult for your opponents to deal with your board. Maybe the most powerful creature in the deck.

  • Deathless Angel : the indestructible can be applied on Kaalia or any creature that needs it.

  • Mother of Runes : giving protection from any color to any creature just by tapping is powerful. It can be replaced with Giver of Runes if you want to add the protection from colorless at the expense of the ability to protect herself.

  • Sephara, Sky's Blade : as you have almost exclusively creatures with flying, she can protect Kaalia and all your other creatures.

  • Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots and Whispersilk Cloak : giving hexproof / shroud is another good way to protect Kaalia.

  • Maze of Ith : allows you to detap Kaalia if she would be killed by being blocked. It doesn't really matters if she doesn't deal damage, the goal of playing a big creature for free has already been achieved.

  • Teferi's Protection : the most efficient protection spell ever for your entire board.

  • Deflecting Swat : Redirecting a target removal on Kaalia for free is so powerful !

  • Sejiri Shelter   and Malakir Rebirth  : versatile cards that can be used as a land in the early game, or as a way to protect one of your creatures later on.

I try to prioritize the 2 CMC ramp cards, as it allows you to play Kaalia on turn 3 if everything goes well.

  • Sol Ring : THE commander's ramp staple.

  • Arcane Signet, Boros Signet, Orzhov Signet, Rakdos Signet, Talisman of Indulgence, Talisman of Conviction, Fellwar Stone : ramp and mana fixing.

  • Dockside Extortionist : can provide a lot of mana if opponents play artifacts and/or enchantments.

  • Smothering Tithe : gives you access to a lot of treasure tokens

  • Austere Command and Merciless Eviction : I like the versatility of these cards, as you often (as a creature-based deck) don't want to destroy all your creatures.

  • Toxic Deluge : can get rid of indestructible creatures, and you can kill only small creatures if needed

  • Ruinous Ultimatum : though quite expensive, this card can win you games.

  • Angel of Despair : It's a 2 for 1, as it gives you a creature (usually played for free with Kaalia) in addition to destroying a permanent.

  • Anguished Unmaking, Despark, Generous Gift and Utter End : Instant speed AND exiles the permanent.

  • Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile : Exiling a creature avoids any graveyard shineanigan, and manages indestructible ones.

  • As you'll play most of your creatures for free with Kaalia, you'll need to refill your hand not to quickly run out of gas.

    • Phyrexian Arena : Drawing one more card every turn is huge, and loosing 1 life isn't much a big deal. In commander, life total also is a ressource you can use. The fact that it's an enchantment makes it even harder to remove.

    • Bloodgift Demon : Same effect as Phyrexian Arena on a creature. But you can eventually make another player draw a card, which gives it a political dimension.

    • Vilis, Broker of Blood : A really good way to draw a lot of cards.

    • Read the Bones and Night's Whisper : Effective ways to draw cards

    • Sensei's Divining Top : Though technically not a real card draw, choosing the next card you'll draw amongst 3 really helps.

    • Scroll Rack : allows you to cycle your hand, giving you access to more spells

    • Reforge the Soul and Wheel of Misfortune : It can refill your hand if you're out of gas.

    • Valakut Awakening   : Here it's more about wheeling your hand than drawing cards but Modal Double-Face cards are really interesting.

  • Demonic Tutor : The best tutor in the game.

  • Vampiric Tutor : Play it during your end step to draw the card you chose right away.

  • Grim Tutor : A bit more expensive than Demonic tutor, but still interesting.

  • Rune-Scarred Demon : A creature that can let you get any card you want.

  • Burning-Rune Demon : It cannot give you exactly the card you want, but you can still get an interesting card out of it. You can eventually get both cards if you choose an angel card and a Bruna, the Fading Light  .
