I'll Take the Hydra, You Take the Low (Kruphix)

Commander / EDH Ramp

Lepard

Sideboard

My very first EDH deck, Kruphix, God of Horizons was formed in 2014 with the goal of casting as large of hydras as possible and resolving every Simic legend I could get my hands on. The deck has changed some since then, but still relies on the card and mana advantage that Kruphix lets me keep to cast enormous hydras and is still stuffed with legendary Simic-colored creatures.

Early game mana ramp is somewhat limited, but can be achieved through Sol Ring , Rampant Growth , and Kiora's Follower . Mid to late game is when the mana production suite truly shines, with slow to get moving but powerful cards such as Gyre Sage , Selvala, Heart of the Wilds , and Oracle of Mul Daya netting me large amounts of mana. Frontier Siege puts in some serious work, netting me four mana a turn- all of which I can keep thanks to Kruphix. For late game, Boundless Realms can often fetch most of my basic lands still in the deck while Doubling Cube + Seedborn Muse allows my mana pool to quickly grow out of control if left unchecked.

Card draw comes from a variety of sources. Blue Sun's Zenith is one of the most reliable, as a scalable effect that allows me to capitalize on my large mana production. Overbeing of Myth is both a (slow) source of card draw and a payoff, as it can get immense after a few turns of drawing. With the size of my hydras, Prime Speaker Zegana often draws 8-10 cards in the late game, making her effective as both a beater and a way of refilling my hand. Recurring Insight relies on my opponent's card drawing capabilities, but as there is usually at least one other person at the table who enjoys drawing cards it is usually a worthwhile investment.

Once my hand and mana pool are full, I aim to win through the use of large hydras and X spells. Mistcutter Hydra and Genesis Hydra can hit the battlefield with enough counters to kill an opponent in one hit, while Hydra Broodmaster can generate an army all by itself. Kalonian Hydra and Primal Vigor allow my hydras to grow even larger, while Nylea, God of the Hunt and Thassa, God of the Sea ensure they connect. Once cast the hydras can be protected by Swiftfoot Boots , Asceticism , and a small counter suite.

While not a combo deck, the deck does run one infinite combo. Experiment Kraj + Gilder Barin + Selvala, Heart of the Wilds allows me to produce infinite mana of any color, place infinite +1/+1 counters on any number of creatures, and use the activated abilities of any creatures on the battlefield (under any player's control) infinitely many times. While the first two creatures are necessary, Selvala can be replaced with any creature that allows my Kraj to tap for 4 or more mana- Karametra's Alcolyte, Gyre Sage , or Kiora's Follower are all valid substitutions. The combo is not incredibly resilient due to the limited availability of haste in my deck and the need for three cards costing a minimum of 11 mana, plus another creature with evasion to finish the job. However, all the pieces can be searched out with Momir Vig, Simic Visionary the deck does have some protection protection between hexproof and counterspells.
